Earning Aeroplan Points
The Chase Aeroplan Mastercard accrues Aeroplan points for all purchases made on the card:
- 3 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on Air Canada purchases, including Air Canada Vacations.
- 3 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on groceries and dining (including takeout and eligible delivery services) worldwide.
- 1 Aeroplan point for every dollar spent on all other purchases.
Cardholders are also eligible to earn an additional 500 Aeroplan points upon spending $2,000 on the card in any calendar month.
Redeeming Aeroplan Points
Air Canada Aeroplan points are best used towards flight redemptions, whether on Air Canada or any of their partner airlines. Aeroplan bookings follow the pricing outlined in the Aeroplan Award Chart, and the best value is often found in booking partner airlines.
Flights on Air Canada can be dynamically priced, so follow our award flight booking best practices to ensure you pay the least amount of Aeroplan points possible for your next redemption.
Aeroplan points can also be redeemed for hotels, car rentals, merchandise, and gift cards. We advise against redeeming your points for these options as the value is far below what you can receive when booking flight redemptions.
Benefits
Chase Aeroplan cardholders receive a variety of perks related to Air Canada:
- Instant Aeroplan 25k Elite status for the current and following calendar year. Cardholders can maintain this status past the initial two calendar years by spending $15,000 USD on the card during a calendar year.
- If a cardholder spends $50,000 USD on the Chase Aeroplan card during a calendar year, they will receive a one-level status bump within the Aeroplan program.
- Free first checked bag on Air Canada flights. This benefit extends to up to eight guests that are traveling on the cardholder’s itinerary.
Chase Aeroplan cardholders will also receive a statement credit of up to $100 USD every four years to be used towards a Global Entry, TSAPre✓, or Nexus membership. Simply charge the application fee to your credit card and you will receive the statement credit.

Would this card’s travel insurance apply for a flight to Cuba (originating from and returning to Canada)? Had anybody have this experience?
I tried to apply through the web site and it did not like the ITIN. I called over the phone and operator was really confused with ITIN, and insisted that I have to use SSN.
When I opened Chase account and a credit card a year or so back in the branch, I asked about Aeroplan and was told that they do not accept applications in-branch, so I have to apply online.
When I log in online and try to browse “available” cards, the Aeroplan is not one of them, it shows 10-11 cards options.
Something got changed? Anybody has any experience recently?
Hi Mike – when you say “it did not like the ITIN”, can you clarify what that means? Did it go pending, did it auto decline?
I would probably HUCA: hang up and call again, because Chase definitely accepts ITINs for credit card applications.
When I submitted – it went to “Ops. Something went wrong” screen without much explanations. I tried to put invalid SSN number, and it went into the same screen, so I assumed that was the culprit.
I had an impression, that the operator just did not want to deal with something unusual, but it took me 30 minutes to get through them for the call, so I will try again after holidays are over.
Thank you for the confirmation – I was worrying that they changed some policies.
Happy New Year!
Hi, were you able to get approved for this card?
Another question, when opening your Chase bank account in branch, did you use your Canadian mail address?
I’ve got the card, but it was a painful process, long time, a lot of back and forth calls with very inefficient call support. And it took a loooong time to get the card – I lost almost whole month out of 90 days bonus period. They are really slow to give official response, so call about application status within two-three days.
I used Canadian address for the checking account, but US address for the card, because they did not accept Canadian. Really weird, – a bit disjointed policies.
Are there any risks in using this card to elevate your Aeroplan status, if the card is open on US address (how otherwise?) and the Aeroplan account is on Canadian address?
Hi Stephen,
Minimal if zero risk. Many Canadians hold the chase card and take advantage of the status elevation perk with no issues. Plus, whose to say you don’t have both a Canadian and US address?
