  • See if you’ll be approved before you apply – with no impact to your credit score.*
  • When applying for a new card, businesses will typically run a “hard check” of your credit report. A hard credit check can cause a temporary impact to your credit score.
  • A soft credit check is a check into your credit report initiated either by you or a company even if you didn’t apply for credit. It is primarily used to screen for pre-approval financing offers or for a background check.
  • Available for American Express personal cards, we’ll let you know your eligibility with no impact to your credit score, so you can submit your application with confidence.*

*Instant decisions are only available for Consumer (also known as Personal) Card applications.

Earning Aeroplan Points

The American Express Aeroplan card earns Aeroplan points for all purchases made on the card:

  • 2 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on eligible Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations purchases.
  • 1.5 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on eligible dining and food delivery purchases in Canada.
  • 1 Aeroplan point for every dollar spent on all other purchases.

Redeeming Aeroplan Points

Aeroplan points are best used towards flight redemptions, whether for Air Canada flights or Aeroplan partner airlines. Aeroplan bookings follow the pricing outlined in the Aeroplan Award Chart, and the best value is often found in booking partner airlines.

Flights on Air Canada can be dynamically priced, so follow our best practices when booking award flights to ensure you pay the least amount of Aeroplan points possible for your next redemption.

Aeroplan points can also be redeemed for hotels, car rentals, merchandise, and gift cards. We advise against redeeming your points for these options, as the value is far below what you can receive when booking flight redemptions.

Benefits

Free First Checked Bag on Air Canada Flights

American Express Aeroplan cardholders receive a free first checked bag on Air Canada flights. This benefit extends to up to 8 guests who are traveling on the cardholder’s itinerary and is a great way to save on Air Canada baggage fees.

Earn SQC Towards Aeroplan Elite Status

For every $20,000 in eligible net purchases on the card, the cardholder will earn 1,000 Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) towards Air Canada Aeroplan status, up to a total of 25,000 SQC.

Air Canada Elite status comes with some very valuable benefits; see our Air Canada Aeroplan status guide for more details.

Fourth Night Free on Hotel Bookings with Aeroplan Points

Through the Aeroplan HotelSavers program, American Express Aeroplan cardholders will receive the fourth night free when making a hotel booking that is paid with their Aeroplan points. This means that if you book a hotel that costs 20,000 Aeroplan points per night, you will only pay 60,000 Aeroplan points for a four-night stay.
