The Almare was a hotel that caught my eye on the Marriott International newsletter, and when I saw it was open and available for booking in October 2024 I made a fairly impulsive decision to travel to Cancun to try out the property.
After staying at the Westin Resort & Spa in Cancun for a brief two nights, I was ready to go more remote and visit the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres to experience what the Almare has to offer.
This was also my first stay at a Marriott all-inclusive property, and this one stands out from your typical Mexican all-inclusive as it is high-end, real luxury. Notably, the property is not totally new, it was refurbished from the previous Palace Isla Mujeres. It was then purchased by SHA Wellness to be managed by Marriott.
Read on for my review of the Almare, a Luxury Collection Resort, Adult All Inclusive in the Isla Mujeres.
Booking & Check-in
I was fortunate to book the Almare Luxury Collection at a favorable industry rate for 3 nights in the last week of November 2024. The regular rate for this property is in excess of $1,000 USD per night, or 88,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night although there is an introductory rate as low as $600 USD right now as it is so new and not everything is open.
Keeping in mind that it is all-inclusive, the regular rate is still a bit outside the budget I would normally allocate to a property per night. Also note that at the time of writing, it is quite difficult to book this property with Marriott Bonvoy points, with limited award availability.

As usual, about 1 month before our stay I emailed the hotel using the Marriott contact form and requested an upgrade. They made a note on the reservation at that time. Then, when the chat option appeared on the Marriott Bonvoy two days before my stay, I sent a chat message to the hotel again making the polite request.
Unfortunately, I was not upgraded prior to or upon my arrival. As you will see, my room ended up being quite gorgeous with a balcony and oceanfront view. So I canβt say I was disappointed.

Upon arriving by boat, there was an Almare server waiting with a tropical welcome drink for me. From there, the staff escorted me to the check-in desk.

There were a few hiccups while checking in to the Almare. For one, they didn’t acknowledge the Marriott Bonvoy elite status whatsoever, including no offer of welcome amenity or room upgrade. As an all-inclusive, there wasn’t any breakfast benefit I was worried about, but still, it did seem a little odd as Marriott properties are usually good at recognizing the status and informing you of your welcome amenity.
More importantly, upon presenting Marriott gift cards to use to cover my stay, they were very confused and fumbled through trying to deny the use of gift cards at the property. I was aware that the Marriott gift card terms and conditions did apply for this property type, so I forced the issue on this. Notably, a few days later at checkout, we were able to resolve and apply the gift cards.
Another oddity is that the check-in staff basically provided no information or explanation about the hotel, its amenities, or dining options. It would have been nice to have a pamphlet or printout, especially given that lots of the restaurants arenβt open or have differing hours from what is advertised in the mobile app or website.
AIMB / STAY App
The property was digital-focused and encouraged the use of the AIMB mobile app or STAY web app. The STAY app could be accessed from a browser or AIMB on the Google Play and Apple App stores.
They are effectively all the same, but the mobile apps function a bit better and allow you to log in and reserve activities. The app was useful for viewing restaurant menus or the activities calendar.

Of course, throughout my stay it occurred a few times where items on the menu would not be available or scheduled activities wouldn’t actually take place. So that is something to be aware of.
Location
The Almare, Luxury Collection All-Inclusive Resort is located on Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico, along the Caribbean coast. Situated at Carretera Garrafon Vista Alegre, KM 4,5 SM 8 Mza. 62, this adults-only, all-inclusive resort offers stunning beachfront views and is approximately 3.3 miles from North Beach and 6 minutes from the Isla Mujeres Ferry Terminal.
The Almare is located on the southwest corner of Isla Mujeres, which is a quieter area compared to the north. The waves of the ocean are also much calmer as opposed to the north face of the island.
The Almare is only a 20 minute walk from Punta Sur, where youβll find a lighthouse, a sculpture garden and the worn remains of a temple dedicated to Ixchel, Mayan goddess of the moon and fertility.

If youβre looking to visit the downtown area, or the famed North Beach (Playa Norte), heading north from the Almare leaves you to choose between residential streets or the busy ring road, and isnβt very walkable. Iβd recommend renting a taxi, scooter or better yet a golf cart if youβre planning to spend time exploring the northern parts of the island.
Transportation
Navigating the Marriott webpage for this hotel, there wasnβt very clear info on how to actually get to the hotel located on Isla Mujeres. I had researched two ferry services that operate from Cancun, however when I started communicating with the hotel on the Bonvoy app two days prior to the stay, they informed me that a complimentary private boat would be available to take me directly to the hotel, from the Renaissance Cancun dock.

I arrived about 20 minutes early for my 14:30 departure time. Two Almare concierge staff came in right at 14:30 and greeted me dressed in white shirts. I was the only guest taking the boat at this time. The boat was a little choppy, but to be expected for this area of the sea.

The two staff members were fantastic, they made great conversation and gave me lots of local tourist tips and information on Isla Mujeres Island.
I booked the same complimentary boat ride back to the Renaissance on my day of checkout. This made it easy for me to schedule a cheap $10 shuttle service from the Renaissance to the Cancun International Airport. I could have easily taken a $30 Uber ride as well.
Parking
The Almare has complimentary on-site parking available to guests.
Room – Standard, Guest Room, 1 King, Balcony
I was staying in Room 306, a standard king room, with a balcony facing the oceanfront. The room opened up to reveal an open-concept bathroom and bedroom, with a separate toilet room on the immediate left side.

In keeping with my Bonvoy-less experience at check-in, there was no welcome message or amenity left in the room. There were however a couple of nice notes left by the housekeeping staff each time they cleaned the room which was appreciated.

The open-concept bathroom was the centerpiece of the room, and had as much space as the bedroom area.

This included a large double vanity with premium Hommage and OLAS amenities like toothpaste, toothbrush, bug spray, etc.

The shower was massive and well-designed with a large round waterfall head. The bathtub was equally luxurious, complete with a bath tray and eucalyptus salts.

In between the bathroom and bedroom were two large closets with automatic lighting.

The bedroom area beyond the closets was large with plenty of natural lighting from the adjacent balcony. I really enjoyed this space.

Between the couch and coffee tables, the smaller table with two chairs, and the balcony, there was beyond enough seating and desk space.

Across from the bed was the television. It was a smart TV that included Netflix.

Below the television was a Nespresso coffee machine, and within the credenza was the minibar. There was a variety of pops, beers, coconut water, and lychee soda. No wine or hard alcohol, however.

The adjacent balcony to the bedroom area was large with two chairs, a table, and a large chaise. It had a magnificent view of the oceanfront.

The drapes and window shades that covered the balcony windows were automatically closed after being pulled. However, this meant it was not possible to leave them partially open. Otherwise, the artificial lighting was great in this room. At night I could get the room completely illuminated. Also, there was no master switch so you’d have to shut off about 10 switches when it’s time for bed. That was only a minor inconvenience but something I noticed.
Last but not least I canβt forget to highlight the toilet room. Nothing too special here. The flush was good and the toilet paper was average. The lighting was quite dim and the room was a bit small, but I agree with the design decision to cut toilet space if it means expanding the other room areas where a lot more time is enjoyed.

I should also comment that I encountered (and flushed to their death) quite a few bugs wandering around the room floor. Around 9-10 to be precise.

Not a big deal, it is Mexico after all, but worth noting that you may want to make a point to wear your slippers around in the rooms here.
Restaurants & Bars
BOGA

BOGA is the primary restaurant at the property, located on the lobby level, open for breakfast and dinner from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM every day. At the time of writing, it was the only option for breakfast other than room service.
BOGA offers authentic Mayan and Mexican cuisine with a focus on local ingredients and exquisite cooking methods. This is fine dining, so expect smaller portion sizes. However, itβs all-inclusive and a la carte, so you can always order more! I ordered two entrees for every breakfast.

I started off my stay with a fantastic dinner here. I had the signature cocktail: Sacred (I initially tried to order the Poxolito, but it turned out to be unavailable). I followed this with Tzilipak as an appetizer, Roasted Duck for my entree, and Ixchel for dessert.

The drink was delicious and strong. I enjoyed the appetizer, but to be honest the bread was an even greater treat. Warm, soft, and the locally inspired butter was excellent. The roasted duck was decent, albeit a little tough. I know that duck can be hard to get right, so I wasnβt totally surprised. The dessert was incredible and more than made up for it however, as one of the best desserts Iβve had at a hotel ever.

The next morning I got to experience breakfast at BOGA. I had coffee with coconut and passionfruit juice. The juice tasted freshly squeezed, as Iβm sure it was. I then had the Benedictines Eggs al recado, and Mayan French Toast.

The benedicts were amazing. The muffin had perfect texture and consistency. Similarly, the french toast was delicious, flaky and sweet. The cream sauce was perfect.
I had two more breakfasts here and one more dinner, while I ordered one dinner through room service.

There isnβt much to say about these two breakfasts other than the fact that they were just as fantastic as the first one.
For the final dinner of my stay at Almare, I went all out, choosing the most adventurous options I could. I had two drinks, I first ordered the Dancing Goats Eag. There was some confusion as it turns out there is also a drink called just βDancing Goatsβ, and the drink labeled βDancing Goats Eagβ, is actually called βAncestorβ.

For my appetizer and entree, I had the Tzotobichay, followed by the Mayan Octopus. The octopus was flavorful and tender, I loved it.

I finished the meal with an interesting dessert called Manjar Blanco.

Overall, BOGA was a highlight of the resort. The food and service was consistently very high quality. I can’t really say I had anything disappointing at all.
The seating options both inside and outside are complementary. During this stay, almost everyone chose to sit outside as the weather was great. I also noticed the peak dining hour seemed to be around 8:00 to 9:00 PM.
I believe BOGA will offer lunch in the future, once the resort is fully open. It would be a big plus to have an additional lunch option available at the property.
The Breeze Bar & Grill

The Breeze is a dual pool bar and grill with a tropical theme. You can order food or drink from the Breeze menu while seated around the pool, at the pool bar, or in the tables and chairs located behind the bar.
The Breeze Bar & Grill is open from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, so you can order lunch or an early dinner from here.

I enjoyed many of the signature tiki cocktails during my numerous visits to the pool, as well as ordering several small bites. Not every cocktail was available but most were. Unlike BOGA, the menu for food and drink was available on paper and more comprehensive than on the AIMB app which didnβt even list the cocktailsβ ingredients.

All the drinks I ordered here were clean and refreshingly delicious. They were never too sweet either which I prefer. They commonly had rum or tequila along with other specialty liquors and coconut or mango ingredients.

Similarly, the small poolside bites I had were great. Particularly the soft shell crab tacos were a highlight, although be prepared as they are the full crab.

One afternoon I moved from the pool to a beachfront spot to get more sun, and was immediately provided with service to order a mid-afternoon beverage and snack.

The pork bellies were great, very tasty and tender. The rib eye tacos were decent, and a little spicy. However, they were a bit on the tougher side. Unsurprisingly, seafood is probably done the best here as opposed to red meats like duck or steak.
On the final day of my stay, I ate my last meal for lunch at Breeze. I had the Guacamole and Tikinxic Style Fish Fillet.

Everything was fantastic and it was a great way to end the stay.
Almare Lobby Bar

Of course, even all-inclusive resorts have lobby bars. The Almare lobby bar is small but elegant. They had a slightly different menu of signature cocktails than elsewhere on the resort, which I appreciated.

The Almare Lobby bar is supposed to be open from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM, according to the AIMB app. During my stay here it was opening at 3:00 PM each day and closed around 10:00 PM.
On one of my visits to the lobby bar, I asked the kind bartender Eli for his recommendation. He pointed me to the Alquimia.

This drink was fantastic, with a perfectly subtle and light banana flavor. This ended up being my favorite drink of my stay and I may or may not have had three more of them over the following daysβ¦
Eli also recommended a spicy margarita with mezcal.

The margarita was one of the spiciest drinks Iβve had, I struggled to finish it. But it was still delicious and refreshing nonetheless.
At a later visit, I tried the Little Dragon Eag which was very tasty too.

Without knocking the drinks I had at Breeze and BOGA, which were also excellent, the best cocktails I had at Almare were those at the Lobby Bar.
Botanik

Botanik is a coffee house and βnatural blends barβ located on the lobby level across from the checkout desk.

In addition to coffee they have a variety of pastries, ice cream, and select other beverages here. They also have coffee liqueurs.

The Marriott website shows hours from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM but the television information screen said 24 hours. It seemed to be the latter as check-in desk staff operated it and would come to help me whenever I went inside.
Room Service
The Almare has 24/7 room service available and I have to say, being able to conveniently order a snack via room service at any time, and without contemplating the cost or 16% tax + tip being added is a real treat.
Almare room service is ordered from a separate PDF menu, as opposed to the digital web app menus of the other restaurants.
Predictably, I made use of room service several times throughout my stay. The first night of arrival I ordered a late-night post-workout snack of Pumpkin Seed Hummus and Guava Cheese Cake.

The order was delivered promptly in around 15 minutes. The cheesecake was different from a traditional cheesecake, but it was great. Tasty but light and not heavy. The hummus was also excellent.
The next day I ordered a full meal for dinner consisting of clam chowder, grilled salmon, and mango tart.

The chowder was interesting and authentic as the soup itself came separate and I had to pour it over the clams. It was excellent.
The salmon was just decent, although perhaps the pumpkin pesto sauce just wasn’t agreeable with my taste buds.
The mango tart was excellent.
Seasalt

Seasalt is the 360 degree restaurant and bar located on the fourth floor rooftop. Seasalt wasn’t serving food yet during my stay but is slated to serve a blend of Mexican and European / Mediterranean cuisines.

Seasalt will definitely be a great spot once it’s fully open, both for dining and just for relaxing or lounging during the day. There was a massive amount of space and the rooftop infinity pool is a great feature too.

I actually found out later in my stay that Seasalt was partially open. I went up the first day and it was desolate however another day they they had a full bar set up and the pool was open.
Hours are listed in the app as 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM while the television listed Seasalt as open for lunch and dinner, so I’m guessing these are going to be subject to change over the next month(s) as they complete the opening.
AlPaso

AlPaso is a very cool concept as a permanent food truck located to the side of the main beach in front of the lobby. They will serve small bites, smoothies, and more in a grab-and-go style.
AlPaso was not open during my visit but hours are listed as 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day.
AlVento

AlVento is a planned βbeach clubβ located right on the main beachfront of Almare. AlVento will seemingly have more of a focus on beverage options but with some fresh seafood as well.
AlVento was not open during my stay but is slated to operate from the hours of 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, similar to Breeze.
AlVento will be a lot more convenient for staff to have a closer bar to the beach. As I did order drinks and food while on the beach, I could tell service was a little slower due to the lack of proximity to a bar.
Facilities
The Breeze – Main Pool

The main pool at Almare is called the Breeze, and is open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day.

The pool is gorgeous and gets lot of great sun throughout the day, although about half the pool ends up shaded as early as 3:00 PM.
I did note that sitting on the far end of the pool away to the left of the pool bar resulted in much slower service and less frequent check ups from the servers. I suppose that shouldn’t be surprising but it should be corrected.
I spent a ton of time at this pool during my stay and overall I really enjoyed the design, drinks, food and service provided by Breeze.
Rooftop Infinity Pool
A secondary pool is available on the 4th floor. This is a smaller pool. It has a spectacular infinity view overlooking the Caribbean Sea with a few chairs.

The rooftop infinity pool, along with Seasalt, was not fully open yet for my stay in November 2024. Once open, the hours are slated to be from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day.
The pool did seem to be open with guests using it, along with limited bar service, during a few days of my stay. So it seems closer to opening than say, AlVento.
ALMA Spa
Almare has its very own upscale spa called Alma Spa. It offers guests a plethora of treatments and amenities. The ALMA spa is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day.

The ALMA Spa is not included in the all-inclusive rate. Instead, guests must order from the spa menu, shown below.

I didn’t get any treatments here but I stumbled in one evening and was given a short tour through all the treatment rooms.

I was impressed with the plethora of different treatments available. Take it with a grain of salt as I’m not a spa enthusiast but it seems they have everything you could want at a spa.
The spa seemed desolate throughout my stay and I do wonder how a spa service will do at a high-end all-inclusive like this property. It might be an interesting option to offer one complimentary treatment to guests to get their foot in the door.
Fitness Center
The fitness center, located on the first floor, was modern and clean with just enough equipment to complete a full workout, but not what I would call a comprehensive gym as there was no squat rack or bench press.

The fitness center had Techno-Gym branded equipment which I’ve seen at many other high-end hotels.

A highlight of this fitness center was all the amenities available including Powerade, apples, and even a Nespresso machine!

I got several workouts in here and enjoyed having the entire gym all to myself, as is usually the case at hotels.
The fitness center at Almare was open 24 hours.
Meeting Room

The Almare had a well-equipped meeting room located on the 2nd floor. There was ample seating and a projector. The room appeared to be well-utilized as there was usually someone in there during my stay.
I would assume it is in operation 24/7.
Beach

The beachfront at Almare was fantastic. Aside from the well-laid-out lounge seating and beds, the water was always warm and extremely clear and calm during the day. The staff recommended using paddle boards or kayaks to explore the water but I saw many guests enjoying ocean swims throughout my stay.

The tranquility of the water on this side of the island and at the Almare specifically was a highlight of this property.
Experiences & Activities
The Almare had a variety of activities planned for each day. These were viewable from the AIMB mobile app, as well as the web-based Stay App. The schedule appeared to be relatively infrequent for different activities, except for yoga and stretching which seems to happen almost every day.
Using the AIMB mobile app for activities was slightly frustrating at times. For activities that require reservation, you can book them on the app, but some of the activities didnβt actually take place during my stay. As well, the staff didnβt actually confirm or enforce the reservations in any way. So it seemed even for activities that were pre-booked, it was a free-for-all / first-come-first-serve situation going on.
Iβm sure (or at least I hope) this will get ironed out as the hotel finalizes its opening.
Almare Yoga
On most mornings at Almare around 9:00 AM there was a guided stretching or yoga class offered to guests.

This activity takes place in the little roofed structure on the main dock in front of Almare. I would recommend pre-booking your spot on the AIMB mobile app.
Agave Journey
The Agave Journey was an activity offered on the first evening of my stay. Unfortunately, it was full when I tried to reserve a spot but I do regret not being more assertive and trying to attend after I learned that the AIMB mobile app bookings weren’t being strictly enforcedβ¦
βOn this journey, you will discover the cultural richness and diversity of flavors that emerge from this ancient plant, the Agave.β
I can tell from the description that Agave Journey is an educational class and tasting of agave spirits: tequila and mezcal.
Sunrise Jogging
If running is your thing, another awesome guided activity is Sunrise Jogging. This starts at 6:00 AM and was only offered every three days during my stay.
On the sunrise jog you embark on a guided run to Punta Sur, where you can view sunset over the cliffs, the oceanscape, and visit the temple of the Goddess Ixchel as well as other sculptures around the area (6 USD entry fee required).

The run was about 3 miles or 5 kilometers, and roughly followed the following route:

Paddleboarding and Kayaking
Almare had a boathouse with paddleboards and two-seat kayaks available to guests. I enjoyed going for paddles many times throughout my stay.

One of the listed activities in the AIMB app is βPaddle Venturesβ / βKayak Venturesβ which is a quick scheduled tutorial given by the staff on how to use paddle boards or kayaks if you havenβt used them before.
The lifeguarded hours at the beach were only as late as 6:00 PM, but I had no trouble going for a paddle close to 7:00 PM on a few nights too.
βIce Popβ Delights

The Almare has a pop-up ice cream bar or βice popβ stand. This was available every day from 15:00 to 16:00 in front of BOGA restaurant.
Definitely a nice little treat. If youβre hankering for ice cream outside of those hours, you can get it anytime from the Botanik Natural Blends Bar too.
Conclusion
The TLDR; of my impression of Almare is that this property has incredible potential but is in need of work to resolve some glaring issues in service, logistics, and β¦ communications. Make no mistake. I, being a relatively easygoing hotel guest and staying here on a cheap industry rate, had a fantastic experience here. But there were definitely many different service hiccups which could have caused frustration for guests, depending on what they value in a luxury all-inclusive property such as this.
For example, Almare outsourced shuttle transportation to a third-party company that reached out to me prior to the stay regarding ground transportation. But there was no mention of water transportation. I wasnβt traveling directly from the airport and it wasnβt until I reached out to the hotel once in Cancun that I was made aware of the complimentary boat service.

Furthermore, a hotel that isnβt fully open needs to communicate to guests immediately on arrival, what is and isnβt open and what hours different amenities are open from. There was conflicting information between the AIMB app, Marriottβs website, the in-room television, and even hotel staff were incorrect at times. It was an adventure figuring all these things out on the first day of my stay.
There was no Marriott Bonvoy Elite recognition at any point in my stay. The hotel manager left me with the impression he barely knew that the property was now managed by Marriott and declined the use of my Marriott gift cards before I reminded him that the Luxury Collection properties are in fact bound by Marriott Gift Card T&Cs and he has to accept them. I was not offered any room upgrade, bonus points, or in-room amenity. I even encountered some resistance asking for a later checkout, which should be automatic for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members and above.

Nonetheless, I canβt understate the plethora of positives of the Almare. The property is gorgeous. The food quality is fantastic and consistent across the board. I didnβt have a single bad dish or drink. The staff are super friendly and warm. As an example, several hotel staff knew my name by only the second day of my stay.
This property has a ton of potential and I really hope it blossoms into the premier luxury property of Isla Mujeres that it’s aiming to be. If you can get a favorable introductory rate, it presents great value as long as youβre okay with the slightly unfinished and unpolished current state. You can easily pay more than 600 USD nightly for luxury properties in Mexico that arenβt even all-inclusive, whether they be Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt.

Awesome review. Highly beneficial
In asserting my decision to proceed with my reservation next week. Two main areas of concern:
1). We get in at 1:30 pm and am afraid that we will miss the 2:30 boat completely. Hoping that they have more frequency or can wait on us along with other guests
2). We have a late flight (5pm). I just made Platinum however not counting on late checkout. Hopefully though they can let us lounge around until about 2 pm. I do know that Marriott Cancun was very strict about not allowing you to use facilities after you checked out (and they were strict about enforcing checkout times) so we shall see how it goes here.
Anyways if you have anything to add to assuage my concerns itd be greatly appreciated. Otherwise i will make it a point to come back and update my experience from arrival to departure.
Hey Allen,
Would love to hear about your experience post-stay regardless! I can’t offer much assuaging for 1), but for 2), I actually had a 5 PM flight too. They allowed me to checkout at 1:00 PM. I had a late lunch and then took the boat around 1:30 PM I believe. Arrived to the renaissance around 2:00 PM and took an Uber to get to the airport around 3:00 PM (traffic was bad).
