Airport lounge access has a soft spot in my heart. Wanting to get into an airport lounge was actually what drove me into this hobby and lifestyle and led me to Frugal Flyer! For many frequent travelers, an airport lounge is like a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle at the gates of the airport, allowing us to relax or get some work done.
When it comes to premium travel rewards cards in Canada, the American Express Platinum cards rise above the rest, both in terms of perks and their enormous annual fee compared to other offerings. While they offer high-end travel insurance and a lucrative welcome bonus, the primary reason many keep these cards in their wallets year after year is the wide breadth of airport lounge access.
Let’s take a deep dive into how airport lounge access works on the American Express Platinum cards and get you well-versed in the rules to ensure you can relax in style before your next flight.
Amex Platinum Cards & The American Express Global Lounge Collection
The American Express Global Lounge Collection is the most comprehensive airport lounge benefit offered by any card issuer in Canada. This benefit is available to both the Personal Platinum and Business Platinum cards, and makes them two of the best credit cards for airport lounge access.
This collection is an umbrella program that grants access to over 1,400 lounges across 140 countries. Rather than being a single membership, it is a partnership between several different lounge networks, ensuring that no matter where you fly, there is likely a door open for you.
A comprehensive list of lounges that you can access lives on the American Express Lounge Search Tool. We recommend that whenever you are heading to an airport, take the time to do a quick search on the tool to see if there are any offerings available. Odds are that you’ll find something!

Changes Coming to Amex Platinum Cards Lounge Access in 2027
While the Platinum card has long been the gold standard for lounge access, American Express has announced significant changes that will take effect in 2027. These changes are primarily designed to address the issue of overcrowding in Priority Pass lounges and Plaza Premium lounges, which make up the bulk of visits for Canadian cardholders. Access to other lounges within the Global Lounge Collection is unaffected.
Here are the changes happening on January 1, 2027:
| Card | Current Airport Lounge Allowance | Changes as of Jan 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum Card | Unlimited lounge access for Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges for cardholder + 1 guest | 6 complimentary visits to Priority Pass and/or Plaza Premium lounges |
| Business Platinum Card | Unlimited lounge access for Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges for cardholder + 1 guest | 6 complimentary visits to Priority Pass and/or Plaza Premium lounges |
| Supplementary Platinum Card | Unlimited lounge access for Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges for supplementary cardholder + 1 guest | 2 complimentary visits to Priority Pass and/or Plaza Premium lounges |
An important note: guests brought into a Priority Pass or Plaza Premium lounge will consume one of your complimentary visits. For example, if you and your spouse want to hang out in the Plaza Premium lounge at YYZ before your flight, that’s 2 of your 6 visits deducted. Lounge allowance resets on January 1st of every year, allowing some possible “double-dipping” in your first cardholder year.
For the “low” price of $20,000 of spend on your card in a calendar year, you can reactivate unlimited Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounge visits back on your Personal Platinum or Business Platinum card. However, we strongly recommend against this as there are many more rewarding ways to spend your hard-earned money.
Airport Lounges Programs Accessible With The American Express Platinum Cards
As we mentioned before, lounge access with the American Express Platinum cards consists of a collection of partnerships with different lounge programs and airlines. Not limiting us to a single membership or program is how it allows us access to over 1,400 lounges across the world. Understanding the rules and intricacies is key to a seamless travel day and lounge visit.
Priority Pass Airport Lounges

Priority Pass is the largest lounge network/program in the world, and your Personal and Business Platinum cards come with a complimentary membership. This means that pretty much anywhere you fly, you will likely have access to a lounge through Priority Pass.
Holding a Platinum card is just step one, though. You will have to directly enrol with Priority Pass using your Personal or Business Platinum card numbers by calling the Platinum Concierge number on the back of your card. Your welcome package will also have detailed instructions on how to get started. Once enrolled, you can use your Priority Pass card or digital membership QR code within the app when you want to enter a lounge in the Priority Pass network.

Plaza Premium Airport Lounges

Plaza Premium is a staple for Canadian travelers, with a massive presence in major hubs like Toronto (YYZ) and Vancouver (YVR). While Plaza Premium briefly left the Priority Pass network, American Express maintained a direct partnership.
You can access these lounges simply by showing your physical Amex Platinum card and a valid boarding pass. You can also access most Plaza Premium lounges by showing your Priority Pass membership card and/or Priority Pass membership QR code.
American Express Centurion Airport Lounges

The American Express Centurion Lounges are flagship and exclusive lounges offered by American Express. There are over 40 Centurion lounge locations in the United States and internationally. Known for high-end decor, chef-curated menus, and premium bars, some of the best lounges are located in major airports like JFK, LHR, LAS, DEN, and HKG.
Access to Centurion lounges is restricted to Platinum and Centurion cardholders. The increased exclusivity of the lounge network often means less crowding. You can also bring two guests into the lounge free with every cardholder visit.
International American Express Airport Lounges
American Express also operates a number of non-Centurion lounges in the following airports:
- Sydney (SYD)
- Melbourne (MEL)
- Delhi (DEL)
- Mumbai (BOM)
- Mexico City (MEX)
- Monterrey (MTY)
- Buenos Aires (EZE)
- Stockholm (ARN)
The same rules apply as the Centurion lounges: unlimited visits for Platinum and Centurion cardholders with 2 free guests on every visit.
Delta Sky Club Lounges

When flying on a same-day Delta-operated flight, Platinum cardholders can access Delta Sky Clubs. Interestingly, Canadian Platinum cardholders have stronger benefits compared to our US counterparts when it comes to Delta Sky Clubs. It’s definitely not often that this is the case.
Canadian Personal and Business Platinum cards get unlimited visits to Delta Sky Clubs as long as they are flying Delta on the same day. Canadian Business Platinum cards also get 2 free guests (the Personal Platinum guest rules are up to the individual lounge rules).
The US Platinum cards are limited to 10 Delta Sky Club visits per year, with each guest costing $50 USD. For the small price of $70,000 USD in annual spending, you can unlock unlimited access, but again, we highly recommend against this, as this spend can be better put to use elsewhere.
Check out our complete guide on Delta Sky Clubs for a deep dive into what you can expect from these lounges!
Lufthansa Airport Lounges
Amex has a unique partnership with Lufthansa. When flying with Lufthansa, Swiss, or Austrian Airlines, Platinum cardholders can access select Lufthansa Business Lounges (regardless of your class of service) or Lufthansa Senator Lounges (if flying in Business Class).
However, it is important to note that not all lounges are a part of this partnership and the rules of entry and guest access vary from lounge to lounge. We highly recommend you use the American Express Global Lounge Collection website’s search tool to look for the specific Lufthansa lounge you are interested in to make sure it’s on the list, and if there are any restrictions.
Other Airport Lounges
The collection also includes smaller networks like Escape Lounges and Airspace Lounges. These are often found in mid-sized US airports and can provide a space for you to sneak away from the hustle and bustle of the airport for a free cup of coffee and a snack.
Keep in mind that these are much smaller lounges and networks with significantly fewer resources, so expectations should be kept a bit lower. However, who doesn’t love a free coffee! To look for these lounges, check out the Lounge Search Tool for whichever airport you’re in to see if there is anything available for you!
Conclusion
The American Express Platinum cards remain the premier choice in Canada for complimentary access to airport lounges. Even with the upcoming lounge allowance changes in 2027, the sheer breadth of the Global Lounge Collection allows enough visits and flexibility for most travellers to relax in a lounge before their flight.
If you have access to US credit cards, you can also consider the American Express US Personal and Business Platinum cards that have nearly identical lounge access, but come with some more credits and perks that may move the needle for you.

Thanks for the article Quentin. I would agree hitting the 20k spend to get lounge access in many cases would not be worth it, but with the recent promotions requiring significantly high spend to get the welcome bonus, 15k, an additional 5k to get the unlimited lounge access would be worth it in my mind.
I did have a question once you hit 20k spend do the supplementary card holders also regain unlimited lounge access for Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges for supplementary cardholder + 1 guest
