Marriott Bonvoy Elite Benefit Guarantees Explained

Marriott Bonvoy continues to be the largest hotel loyalty program in the game, both by the number of members and the number of hotels under the program. They are also one of the few programs that publicly publishes what you can expect to receive as perks of your elite status. These are called the Elite Benefit Guarantees

Guarantees will vary depending on the level of status you hold and what property you are staying at. Let’s look at what we can expect from the Marriott Bonvoy Elite Benefit Guarantees, how to take advantage of them, and most importantly, what happens if we don’t receive them.

What are the Marriott Bonvoy Elite Benefit Guarantees?

Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status comes with up to 5 guaranteed benefits as a way of showing gratitude for your loyalty to the brand. As it is implied in the name, these are guaranteed, meaning that if they don’t deliver on them, you may be eligible for compensation (in most cases).

The image below captures what guarantees Marriott Bonvoy elite members are entitled to based on their earned status level:

Unfortunately, how the elite benefit guarantee functions is not as straightforward as we would hope. Instead of having a hard and fast rule for each benefit across the board, the benefits are stratified by brand. Let’s take a deep dive into each of the 5 benefits, who is eligible for them, at what properties, and what we can expect!

Ultimate Reservation Guarantee

Have you ever heard of someone getting “walked” by their hotel? Essentially, this means that although you booked and confirmed a hotel room for a specific stay, there is no room available for you when you arrive to check into the hotel. This can be extremely frustrating and might leave you stranded.

Luckily, if you are a Silver Marriott Bonvoy Elite Member or higher, you’ll be covered under the Ultimate Reservation Guarantee. For whatever reason the hotel can’t honor your reservation, they will pay for your accommodation at a nearby hotel PLUS compensate you for your troubles.

Compensation is divided into Silver and Gold members and Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador members and varies depending on the hotel brand. Below, you will see a comprehensive table of what you’ll receive if you find yourself getting “walked” at a Marriott Bonvoy property:

Hotel BrandsSilver & GoldPlatinum, Titanium, or Ambassador
EDITION®, The Luxury Collection®, W® Hotels, JW Marriott®, Marriott Hotels®, Sheraton®, Delta Hotels®, Le Méridien®, Westin®, Autograph Collection®, Renaissance® Hotels, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy™, Tribute Portfolio®, Gaylord Hotels®$200 USD + 90,000 points$200 USD + 90,000 points
Courtyard®, Four Points®, SpringHill Suites®, Protea Hotels®, Fairfield by Marriott®, AC Hotels®, Aloft®, Moxy® Hotels, Residence Inn®, TownePlace Suites®, Element®$100 USD$100 USD + 90,000 points
City Express by Marriott™, Four Points Flex by Sheraton™$50 USD$50 USD + 45,000 points
The Ritz-Carlton®, Ritz-Carlton Reserve®, St. Regis®Not applicable$200 USD + 140,000 points

If you are staying at a hotel outside of the US, you will be compensated for the same amount in their local currency.

Guaranteed Welcome Gift

The Guaranteed Welcome Gift benefit only applies to Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador Elite members, and the benefit is the same regardless of the level of status that you hold.

City Express500 points per stay. For City Centro locations: Breakfast in restaurant per night for member and guest.$25 USD

Unfortunately, “amenity” is extremely vague and really depends on the specific property that you are staying at. This is very much a “your mileage may vary” situation and can be hit or miss. Our recommendation here is to always take the breakfast or food and beverage credit as it will mostly outvalue the minuscule amount of points that is offered as a benefit.

Guaranteed Room Type

Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador Elite members will have their choice of room and bed honored when booking. In essence, if you get a room that doesn’t match what you booked, you are eligible for compensation.

St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort two bedroom ocean villa exterior from ocean

For example, if I booked a room, as a Platinum Elite member, with ocean view, balcony, and king sized bed and was given a room with 2 double beds and no view, I could be eligible for compensation. This applies to the following hotel brands:

Hotel BrandCompensation
The Luxury Collection, W Hotels, JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Delta Hotels, Le Méridien, Westin, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Tribute Portfolio, Gaylord Hotels$100 USD
AC Hotels, Courtyard, Four Points, SpringHill Suites, Protea Hotels, Residence Inn$50 USD
Fairfield by Marriott, Aloft, Moxy Hotels, City Express, Four Points Flex, TownePlace Suites, Element$25 USD

This does not apply to room upgrades. For example, if I were a Titanium Elite member, I would be eligible for a room upgrade based on availability. However, this is not guaranteed, and you will not be eligible for compensation if there are no upgrades available.

Guaranteed Lounge Access

Another benefit for members at Platinum Elite and above is guaranteed hotel lounge access at select properties:

Hotel BrandLounge AccessCompensation
JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels, Delta Hotels, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels (no resorts included)Lounge access for elite member and one guest. If the property has no lounge or the lounge is closed, you may choose from a daily breakfast in restaurant or 750 points per night.$100 USD if no breakfast (or alternative) is offered.
Courtyard (Outside US and Canada Resorts excluded)Available only in properties with a lounge. Lounge access for elite member and one guest. If the lounge is closed, breakfast in restaurant will be offered. No compensation
Sheraton, Le Meridien, Westin (including resorts)Lounge access for member and one guest. No alternative if the lounge is closed. No compensation

It is important to note that lounge access is only available for the room that the Platinum Elite (or above) member is staying in. Thus, if you book multiple rooms under your elite status, it will not carry over to the other bookings.

As with the elite welcome gift benefit, if there is no lounge available, always take the breakfast, as the value will outweigh the points they are offering you instead.

48-Hour Guaranteed Availability

Sometimes, we have last-minute plans and need to find a place to stay on short notice. If you are a Titanium Elite or Ambassador Elite member and book a stay at least 48 hours in advance of check-in, you will be guaranteed a room. While this sounds great on paper, there are some caveats that make it less valuable.

This Elite Benefit Guarantee only applies to paid stays – no using points or free night certificates. The price that you are able to book the room at is typically going to be at the highest rate possible, thanks to Marriott Bonvoy’s dynamic pricing. Essentially, the closer to the stay that you book the room, the more expensive it is going to be. If there are any “special events” going on, the property has the right to turn you away.

Lastly, there is no compensation for this benefit not being available. However, if you are able to book the room and get “walked,” you are still eligible for the Ultimate Reservation Guarantee.

While it is handy to have this option open to us, I wouldn’t count on it and would likely look elsewhere for something cheaper.

How to Claim the Marriott Elite Member Benefits Guarantee

For the most part, there really isn’t anything that you need to actively do to claim a Marriott Bonvoy Elite Guarantee. Simply hold the required status (4 out of the 5 benefits require Platinum Elite or above), book your hotel, and check in. The front desk staff should acknowledge your elite status and outline the benefits.

Like we said multiple times above, it’s almost always a better deal to take the food and beverage credit or meal in the restaurant, as it will most likely outvalue the minuscule amount of Marriott Bonvoy points that they offer instead. We value Marriott Bonvoy points at just under 1 cent per point.

So if you are a Platinum Elite member (or above) staying at a Courtyard, we recommend you take the $10 USD food and beverage credit instead of the 500 Marriott Bonvoy points (which translates to about $5).

Here’s where things can get interesting: What happens if they don’t offer you the benefit? At that point, you are eligible for compensation! The Guaranteed Welcome Gift is where you will catch most hotels forgetting to offer you the choice upon check-in.

You must bring it up to the front desk that you did not receive your entitled Elite Guaranteed Benefit while you are still staying at the hotel. Marriott Bonvoy’s terms and conditions clause 4.1.d states:

“If an Elite Member believes that compensation is due with respect to any aspect of the Elite Benefits Guarantee, he/she must request payment of the compensation while still a guest at the Participating Property, prior to checking out. Failure to request such payment prior to check out will result in a complete waiver of any right to receive such compensation.”

We also understand that it can be tough to ask hotel staff to honour your Elite Guarantee Benefit. None of us want to be a Karen and end up on a viral TikTok video complaining to the front desk of a hotel! However, we also don’t want our loyalty to Marriott Bonvoy to go unrewarded and leave cold, hard cash on the table.

Check out our guide on how to “complain” to a hotel with tact to get some tips on how to be respectful while also getting your Elite Guarantee Benefit (or compensation)!

My Experience with the Marriott Bonvoy Elite Member Benefits Guarantee

I found myself in Washington, DC last year for a conference and stayed at the Courtyard Washington Convention Centre. When I checked into the hotel, the front desk staff kindly acknowledged my Marriott Bonvoy Elite status but, funnily enough, didn’t mention anything about the 500 points per stay or $10 USD food and beverage credit that I was supposed to receive.

quentin in washington dc at conference

In hindsight, I don’t blame the staff at all for this – this was the largest medical conference in the world for gastrointestinal health, and over 30,000 people were in DC for the week. Being one of the designated hotels, they had a lot of people to check in. Additionally, I also made the reservation using the conference’s booking system at a corporate rate. While I did put in my Marriott Bonvoy number to receive elite qualifying nights, points, and benefits, it may not have been obvious when checking me in.

Once the rush of the check-ins died down the next morning, I went down to the front desk and kindly notified them of my missing benefit. They were extremely apologetic and asked which benefit I wanted (obviously chose the $10 USD food and beverage credit), and I was on my way.

They even threw in the credit from the previous night (which I’m not sure is official policy or goodwill from the staff). While I could have pursued additional compensation under the elite benefits guarantee, I was just happy to receive what I was entitled to.

Conclusion

The Marriott Bonvoy Elite Benefit Guarantees are designed to reward your loyalty to Marriott Bonvoy hotels. With the right elite status, we can leverage a number of benefits that can ultimately save us from the headache of being “walked” or spending money on breakfast every day.
