Triangle Rewards & WestJet Rewards Partnership: What You Need To Know

Over the past few years, Canadian loyalty programs have leaned heavily into partnerships, creating integrated ecosystems that allow members to earn travel rewards on everyday retail spending. While Air Canada Aeroplan has been leading the way with its retail partnerships, including partnerships with Starbucks, LCBO, Uber, Journie Rewards, and World of Hyatt, other loyalty programs have been catching up with new and exciting collaborations.

WestJet has been broadening its ecosystem by launching its partnership with Canadian Tire’s Triangle Rewards. Similar to other partnerships in the points and miles space, this collaboration allows members of both programs to link their accounts and unlock reciprocal earning opportunities. Let’s do a deep dive into everything you need to know about the Triangle Rewards and WestJet Rewards partnership, how it works, and how to maximize your return.

What is the Triangle Rewards & WestJet Rewards Partnership?

Much like Aeroplan’s retail partner network, the Triangle Rewards and WestJet Rewards partnership uses a linked-loyalty accounts system. Once you link your individual accounts with each program, you create a “spend once, earn twice” dynamic with both Triangle Rewards and WestJet.

When shopping at stores that earn Triangle Rewards, you will earn 1 WestJet Rewards point for every $2 spent on top of the existing CT Money you would have earned anyway.

On the flip side, when booking flights with WestJet, you will earn 0.4% back in CT Money on the value of the booking. However, this excludes the costs of any other travelers on the same booking. If you choose to book with a Triangle Credit Card, you will earn an additional 0.6% back in CT Money for a total of 1%.

Lastly, you have the option of converting your WestJet Rewards points into CT Money at a rate of 120 WestJet Points to $1 of CT Money. We highly recommend against doing this because 120 WestJet Points are worth $1.20 towards the base fare of a WestJet flight ticket redemption, so you are losing 20% every time you convert. Of note, you cannot convert CT Money to WestJet points at this time, and there is no indication that this will change in the near future.

How Can Triangle Rewards Members Benefit?

For Triangle Rewards loyalists who often fly WestJet, this partnership is a welcome opportunity to earn additional CT Money to add to your balance. As mentioned, linked members will earn 0.4% back on eligible spend with WestJet, which includes base fare, checked bag fees, and seat selection fees (taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges do not count as eligible spend).

The one glaring downside of this earning structure is that you will only earn the CT Money associated with your personal travel and not others on the same itinerary. However, it appears that your travel partners on the same itinerary can also have linked Triangle and WestJet Rewards accounts to get credited their 0.4% CT Money as well (YMMV on this one). CT Money earned from WestJet travel will deposit into your Triangle Rewards account within 30 days of completing travel.

The partnership introduces a one-way conversion feature allowing you to transfer WestJet points into CT Money:

  • Conversion Rate: 120 WestJet points = $1.00 in CT Money
  • Minimum Transfer: 2,400 WestJet points ($20 CT Money)

On the flip side, WestJet points have a straightforward redemption baseline of 100 WestJet points = $1 CAD toward WestJet ticket base fares. There are several other redemption options available with WestJet points, but the value of your WestJet points can vary greatly depending on the redemption.

Converting at a 120:1 ratio yields roughly ~0.83 cents per point in value. We highly recommend against conversion, as this is a straight-up loss in value that you would retain if you used it on WestJet travel. Transfers are strictly one-way; you cannot convert CT Money into WestJet points.

How Can WestJet Rewards Members Benefit?

WestJet Rewards members will earn 1 WestJet Point for every $2 (pre-tax) spent at eligible stores that earn Triangle Rewards. These stores include:

  • Canadian Tire
  • Party City
  • SportChek
  • Mark’s Work Wearhouse
  • Pro Hockey Life
  • Sports Rousseau
  • Hockey Experts
  • Atmosphere
  • L’Entrepôt du Hockey
  • Sports Expert

The earn rate equates to 0.5% back in WestJet Points when spending at these Triangle-branded stores, on top of whatever you would have earned in CT Money anyways. While this may not add up quickly, this is a very low-effort way to earn WestJet Points on purchases you would’ve made anyway!

If you have a big household purchase coming up such as a new vacuum, BBQ, or home renovations, you may want to consider doing some of your shopping at Canadian Tire to get some additional return on spend!

Earning Even More With A Triangle Rewards Credit Card

One of my favourite credit cards continues to be the Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard for a number of reasons that we’ve talked about many times in the past. Now, we can add another perk: you increase your earn rate when booking WestJet flights from 0.4% to 1% back in CT Money.

Should You Pay for WestJet Flights With a Triangle Mastercard?

In almost all scenarios: no. While 1% in CT Money on airfare is an upgrade over the baseline 0.4%, putting flight spend on a Triangle card involves significant opportunity cost.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard earns an equivalent of 2.0% back in WestJet points on WestJet purchases, provides a free first checked bag for the primary cardholder and up to 8 guests, and offers the annual Companion Voucher.

As you earn the baseline 0.4% CT Money merely by having your accounts linked, the optimal strategy is to keep your accounts linked and pay for your WestJet flights with a strong travel card like the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

Sacrificing free checked bags, stronger insurance, and a higher travel earn rate just to pick up an extra 0.6% in CT Money rarely makes financial sense.

Conclusion

The Triangle Rewards and WestJet Rewards partnership is a welcome “set it and forget it” addition to Canada’s loyalty landscape. While it will not completely transform your points strategy overnight, there is zero downside to linking your accounts. Doing so ensures you automatically pull in extra WestJet points on everyday purchases at Canadian Tire, SportChek, and Mark’s, while netting bonus CT Money on your WestJet flights in the background.

WestJet also has similar partnerships with SkipTheDishes and Telus that have no downside to linking your accounts, so make sure you set those up while linking your Triangle account!
