Review: Hotel Muse Bangkok, Autograph Collection

hotel muse review featured image

Hotel Muse Bangkok was a fun stop on my journey around the world to earn 1,000,000 SAS EuroBonus miles. It is decently located, about a 10-minute walk from a transit station and only one hour door-to-door from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), but still quiet enough to be restful. The hotel’s design is striking, playing on a classic luxurious feel that doesn’t seem overdone.

It was a lovely home base for my 20-hour stopover in The Big Mango, so let’s get into my review of Hotel Muse Bangkok, an Autograph Collection hotel.

Booking

I booked Hotel Muse Bangkok using an industry rate; however, redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points could be an excellent option, depending on the cash rate. Averaging around $250 CAD with taxes and fees, or 25,000 points per night, you’ll be around 1 cent per point, around the value you should expect from a Marriott Bonvoy point.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points in Canada is by signing up for the American Express Marriott Bonvoy card or the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Business card to expand your membership.

Check-in

I arrived at the hotel fairly late, around 8:00 PM, so unfortunately, I missed the Elite Happy Hour, which occurs daily from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Speakeasy Lounge. It’s described as:

Enjoy free-flow selected alcoholic drinks, including wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks, coffee, and tea. Refined culinary delights savor gourmet canapes and a curated selection of indulgent bites.

Even though I arrived late, I was upgraded to a Yama Executive guest room. This room doesn’t appear to be any different from a standard base room, except it’s on a higher floor and includes access to the Elite Happy Hour, even if you’re not a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum or Titanium Elite member

Waiting for me at check-in was a series of welcome drinks that were more like shots, and from what I gathered from the presentation, some had alcohol, but not all of them. They were all delicious, and even if you don’t enjoy the taste of alcohol, you will enjoy these delightful creations.

The lobby has a funky aesthetic that perfectly complements the Autograph brand. I was already a fan of the hotel just for the vibes.

Location

Hotel Muse is about a 10-minute walk from the Chit Lom local transit stop, meaning it’s pretty close to everything. If you consider Nana Plaza a tourist destination, it would be the closest thing to walk to, about 25 minutes away. When I arrived in Bangkok so late, that was pretty much the only interesting thing I could witness.

During my walk there, I decided to take a Tuk-Tuk, and for about $3 USD, I saved myself 25 minutes of walking.

Parking

Parking is complimentary, but you would have to be brave enough to rent a car and drive in Bangkok!

Room – Yama Executive, Guest Room, 1 King, High Floor

While it would have been nice to stay in a suite, I was only in Bangkok for 20 hours before going to Guangzhou, so it didn’t matter. The elevators up to the rooms are ornate and feature lots of attention to detail.

It’s a fairly narrow hallway stepping into the room, truthfully better shown from the opposite angle.

In the oval cherrywood chest, you’ll find the minibar, which had prices in Thai baht that were quite reasonable. For example, the Singha Beers were only $4 CAD, which is a lot compared to street prices, but at a 5-star hotel, they could certainly get away with charging a lot more.

Across the hall was the closet, which was plenty large and accommodated my bags nicely for hiding while I photographed the room. In the closet is the safe, and just across from the closet is the full-length mirror, which was just big enough to pass my selfie test.

Across from the closet is the dramatic French door entrance to the bathroom, which shows even more fantastic attention to detail. The towels are perfectly folded, and virtually every product is emblazoned with an M.

Matching the risque energy of the Maidi Paidi Bangkok, the bathroom has a glass wall with a view directly into the bedroom. Granted, there is a privacy shade if you share the room without romantic intentions. Virtually every amenity you could need was also provided on the bathroom vanity.

The shower was large but featured my least favorite Marriott trend of communal bath products. They are unbranded but smell nice.

The rest of the room is relatively simple. It features a king-size bed, an office area, and a chaise lounger just behind where I took this photo.

A fantastic spread of fruits, sweets, nuts, and two water bottles were waiting for me in the room. I felt very appreciated as a Titanium Elite member! The view out of my floor-to-ceiling window was spectacular as well.

Housekeeping had set up water and slippers on either side of the bed, with more of that wonderful attention to detail. The slippers looked wonderfully cushy but lacked support.

Unfortunately, the bed was too firm for my liking, and getting out of bed in the morning, I was almost in worse shape than when I settled down for the night! I’m inclined to think that maybe I slept on my hip wrong, as I had been on 18 flights over 9 days. But it took some serious, dedicated stretching just to walk without a limp.

I’m sure not everyone has had this experience with Hotel Muse’s mattresses, but they didn’t work well for me. If other options seem less than ideal, I might give this hotel another shot when I revisit Bangkok.

The foot end of the bed featured a neat leather-wrapped dresser styled like a vintage traveling trunk.

Restaurants & Bars

Medici Kitchen & Bar

Medici is Hotel Muse’s flagship restaurant, located in the basement. Although I didn’t opt to eat at an Italian-themed restaurant in Bangkok on my only night here, the reviews are fantastic! The bar also looks wonderfully designed and inviting.

Salon

Salon is located in the hotel lobby with lots of natural light from the ground-level floor-to-ceiling windows. As a Titanium Elite member, I was given a coupon for Salon to be used for an afternoon tea set between 2 and 5 pm, but my flight from Bangkok left in the early afternoon, so it didn’t work to stop in.

Babette’s Steakhouse – Marriott Elite Breakfast

Unfortunately, this restaurant does not serve Steak and Eggs as an elite breakfast option, even though it doubles as a breakfast restaurant. I didn’t dine at Babette’s for dinner. Instead, I opted for a night market for an authentic Thai experience.

That being said, the breakfast here was an excellent buffet that included table service egg entrees.

By the time the dust settled from my tour of the breakfast facilities, I had ended up with a plate of savory Asian foods and a freshly made egg benny.

Speakeasy – Rooftop Bar

On the 24th floor is the hotel’s crown jewel, a rooftop bar with fantastic skyline views. It was hyped up to me by the staff on check-in, but sadly, it was too busy to get a spot for a drink before I went out for the evening. I returned to the hotel about 30 minutes before closing but missed out on a seat again as they had already offered last call.

Based on the stock photos from Marriott, I was disappointed to miss out. However, I was grateful for a few hours to explore Bangkok and enjoy the local cuisine. It just means I’ll have to be back again!

Facilities

Fitness Center

Although I didn’t use the fitness facilities during my stay, the gym was well-equipped and had great city views.

Pool

I wish I had more time to spend at the pool, as it seemed lovely! Bangkok is notoriously sweltering hot, so this is the perfect place to beat the heat in a mostly shaded environment.

Conclusion

I enjoyed my quick overnight stay at Hotel Muse. It was easy to access from BKK and felt as luxurious as it looked. I wish I had better things to say about the mattress, as the rest of the stay was lovely. However, maybe you can chalk that up to jet lag and being stuck in an economy seat for ~40 hours before spending the night here.

I encourage other travelers to try Hotel Muse, considering its reasonable cash and Marriott Bonvoy points pricing!
