Bills. We all have them, they’re as certain in life as death and taxes.
Nobody likes paying them, yet pay them we must. So why not reward yourself a little for being financially responsible?
Today, I want to highlight a way that you can pay almost any bill in Canada with a specific group of credit cards without being charged any annoying service fees. This is a feature brought by Canadian Tire Financial Services, and it’s why one of their cards should probably always be in your wallet.
Canadian Tire Financial Services Bill Pay: A Powerful Tool
There are many advantages to paying bills with a credit card, so long as you aren’t being charged any fees. This is where the power of the Canadian Tire Financial Services Bill Pay feature really shines.
The first is the possibility of rewards. While Canadian Tire Money (issued under the Triangle Rewards program) isn’t as exciting as Aeroplan or Alaska miles, it is useful. Almost all Canadians shop at Canadian Tire, or one of its affiliated stores like Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s Work Wearhouse, and Pro Hockey Life at least once in a while. We all need new sneakers sooner or later, right?

Second, paying with a credit card can give you up to 55 days of free cash flow. For example, if you receive a $5,500 property tax bill you need to settle, you can pay the day after your credit card statement posts. You’d then only need to pay 21 days after your next statement posts, thus giving you the 55 days of interest-free cash flow until you need to pay your credit card.
Canadian Tire Financial Services makes this easy by giving Canadians a very comprehensive list of potential payees through their bill pay platform. I just want to give a couple of ideas of the payees that they offer, but it’s good to know that you can potentially pay for tuition, property taxes, and utilities like hydro bills using your Triangle Mastercard!
Here are just a few of the bill payees you can expect to see:

All of these bill payees will earn you Canadian Tire Money (CTM) Rewards when paid via Canadian Tire’s bill pay portal. We’ll get into the exact steps to follow in a moment, but for now, remember: you earn 1% back in CTM when paying bills with the Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard, and only 0.5% back on the World and regular versions.
There’s also a cashback schedule unique to the Canadian Tire Cash Advantage Card that’s a hair more complex and denominated by tier. This card earns cashback, but at a reduced rate:
- 0.25% on the first $1500 spent
- 0.50% on the next $1500 spent (between $1,500 and $3,000)
- 1.00% on the next $21,000 in spend (between $3,000 and $24,000)
- 1.50% on all spend thereafter
This is, of course, only helpful if you are making huge amounts of organic spend per year, but this could potentially be useful for businesses that need the cash flow and bill pay option.
How to Use The Canadian Tire Financial Services Bill Pay Feature
Step 1: Hold an Eligible Canadian Tire Financial Services Credit Card
The first step to using Canadian Tire’s bill pay service is to get a Canadian Tire credit card. Some of my friends know I write for a credit card rewards and travel blog and are always surprised that my first recommendation to anyone asking for the “best” credit card in Canada isn’t a travel card, but the Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard.
The Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard includes valuable benefits such as complimentary gold membership to the Canadian Tire roadside assistance program.

The reason for this is simple: You can earn 1% back on bill payments. On top of that, the card comes with free roadside assistance, which is very important in a winter country like Canada, and you get elevated earn rates at Canadian Tire’s family of stores under the Triangle loyalty program. This is a no-brainer card for its $0 annual fee, and one of the best credit cards for everyday Canadians.
Of course, if you don’t meet the minimum personal or household income requirements for this product, then look at the World or basic versions of the card. These don’t have free roadside assistance, but do have the bill pay feature and elevated earn rates at Triangle-branded stores.

You could also look into the Canadian Tire Cash Advantage card, though honestly, I think this is more of a niche product for small businesses with huge cash expenditures per year so as to hit the 1.5% cashback threshold.
With Canadian patriotism at an all-time high, there’s no better way to support Canadian businesses than using credit cards issued by local businesses to pay your bills and make purchases in Canada!
Step 2: Log in to the Bill Pay Platform
Once you have your eligible Canadian Tire Triangle credit card in hand, head on over to ctfs.com and log in. Note that you cannot use the bill pay platform on mobile; it needs to be done via desktop.

Now that you’re logged in, select “Payments” from the top bar.

Now that you’re on the “Payments” screen, go to the bottom left and press “Manage Payees” and then “Add Payee” to see the following screen.

To find your desired bill payee, you can input various words or phrases. The bill payees you can find within are pretty interesting; for example, I put in the word “Honda”. Apparently, Moncton Honda in the beautiful province of New Brunswick might let you use Canadian Tire Financial Services bill pay to make a payment to them. Not too bad for people there looking to buy a new or used vehicle from this dealership.
As always, double-check before making a big payment, and consider making a smaller payment to confirm before sending thousands of dollars.
Step 3: Pay Your Eligible Bills
Now’s the time to pay the piper and finalize the payment. Before completing the transaction and charging your Canadian Tire credit card, you’ll need to provide the required payment information to make sure this payment is specific to you.
Being in Edmonton, I put in my property taxes and filed out some placeholder information:

Then, all you need to do is hit the checkbox that says “I have read the online Bill Payment Terms & Conditions” and hit continue.
Once the payee is added, select the “Make a Payment” option on the left-hand side of the screen, and you’ll land on the page where you can submit the payment:

Now you can input the dollar amount that you wish to pay. Hit “Pay Bills” and you’re all done! Payments should settle in the receiver within 3-5 business days.

And that’s it. You’ve paid your bills, your Canadian Tire credit card will be charged, and you just earned Canadian Tire Money for paying everyday expenses! Remember, you can always manage payees and add bills or remove others from the portal anytime you want.
Conclusion
Canadian Tire Financial Services’ unique bill pay procedure and portal can be a great way to get cash flow flexibility on all your everyday expenses, as well as to earn rewards whenever you need to pay your bills that you wouldn’t normally be able to earn rewards on.
We hope that you continue to pay bills the Canadian Tire way and support local businesses.
