Credit card welcome offers change frequently and American Express Canada has just pushed a new round of offers on their two flagship premium cards: the American Express Platinum card and the American Express Business Platinum card.

Let’s dive into the new American Express Canada credit card offers launched on September 26th.

American Express Platinum Card

The American Express Platinum card now has a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points, earned through a segmented rewards structure. This offer does not currently have an expiry date.

American Express Platinum

The American Express Platinum card earns Membership Rewards and offers cardholders a variety of benefits including an annual $200 travel credit, complimentary airport lounge access, an annual $200 dining credit, and instant elite status with many hotel loyalty programs.

  • Earn 30,000 Membership Rewards points when you make a purchase between 14 and 17 months of card membership

This new offer on the American Express Platinum card also comes with a number of significant changes to the card.

On the positive side, the card now includes a $200 annual dining credit. Cardholders will need to enroll in this benefit and will need to spend at least $200 in one purchase at an eligible restaurant as outlined by American Express. This is in addition to the pre-existing $200 annual travel credit that can be used via the American Express Travel Portal, including for the Fine Hotels & Resorts program.

The most notable negative change is that the annual fee is increasing to $799 up from the previous fee of $699. The earning rate on the card has also been decreased slightly, as cardholders will only earn 2 Membership Rewards points for every dollar spent on eligible dining and food delivery purchases, down from a previous 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar.

The Platinum card also continues to offer a variety of airport lounge perks, including access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection and Centurion lounges.

American Express Business Platinum Card

The American Express Business Platinum card earns Membership Rewards points and offers cardholders benefits including complimentary access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, a $100 NEXUS membership credit, an annual $200 travel credit, and more.

The new welcome bonus is structured as follows:

  • Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points when you charge $15,000 in net purchases to your card in the first 3 months
  • Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards points when you make a purchase between 14 and 17 months of card membership

This new offer on the American Express Business Platinum card also comes with a number of significant changes to the card.

There have been a number of significant positive additions to the benefits of the Business Platinum card. Cardholders can now enroll and access up to $500 in business statement credits on qualifying purchases with Dell and Indeed. They can also enroll and receive up to $120 in wireless credits per year, split out as a $10 per month credit to be used towards phone bills or other qualifying purchases.

Similar to the Platinum card, the American Express Business Platinum card now offers a $200 annual travel credit for each year of card membership. Cardholders can also access a $100 CAD credit for NEXUS every 4 years which can be used to apply for or renew a NEXUS membership.

On the other hand, the most notable negative change is that the annual fee is increasing to $799 up from the previous fee of $499. This is a massive increase of $300 and may discourage those who were previously interested in the card as it is a large upfront fee, even with a significant amount of benefits and a strong welcome bonus.

Similar to the American Express Platinum card, the Business Platinum continues to offer complimentary airport lounge access through a variety of programs. The American Express Business Platinum card is still the best credit card to refer from in Canada, thanks to the high Membership Rewards bonus per referral.

  1. Hi,

If I apply for Amex Platinum now (Sept 5th), would still be able to avail lower annual fee? Or you think my annual fee will posted after September 26th and I will end up paying higher annual fee.

    Reply
    • Yes you would get the lower annual fee, making it a great time to apply:

      • $200 annual dining credit (2023)
      • $200 annual dining credit (2024)
      • $200 travel credit
      • $150 with rebate from Frugal Flyer

Essentially you don’t pay any fee, and in fact have a gain of $50, not even mentioning the welcome bonus.
