How to Earn & Redeem Scene+ Points With Expedia

scene plus and expedia partnership featured image

Scene+ is one of the newest contenders in the Canadian loyalty space, launching with a bang back in late 2021 when it replaced the old Scene program from Cineplex and the ScotiaRewards program from Scotiabank.

All non-cashback Scotiabank credit cards earn Scene+ Rewards points, and now Scene+ has also signed a deal with Expedia to allow users to make travel bookings easier, all while earning rewards in the form of Scene+ points or redeeming Scene+ points to save money on their travels.

Let’s dive in to cover everything you need to know about Scene+ Points and Expedia.

What is the Scene+ & Expedia Partnership?

Expedia Group is the largest Online Travel Agency (OTA) in the world, while Scene+ Rewards has rapidly become one of the most well-known loyalty programs in Canada. They have now teamed up to create a new travel portal, called Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia.

Scene+ Rewards Points, just like their predecessors, have always been redeemable at a hard cap of 1 cent per point on all transactions coding as travel, be they as mundane as Uber redemptions or as luxurious as globetrotting business-class flights. They can also be redeemed for grocery and liquor purchases at the same value.

Let’s not forget that Scene+ points are abundant and can be earned with Scotiabank’s many co-branded credit cards, via routine daily shopping at all supermarkets under the Empire group umbrella, dining at a variety of Canadian restaurants, and watching movies or buying concessions at Cineplex movie theatres.

Since the Scene+ Rewards loyalty program can be accessed by Canadians every day in so many different ways, the partnership with Expedia offers an even easier and more convenient way to redeem points at a decent value and save on travel purchases.

How to Earn & Redeem Scene+ Points With Expedia

As a Scene+ member, when you book travel with Scene+ Travel Powered by Expedia, you will earn 3 Scene+ points for every $1 you spend on travel. If you pair this with a credit card that earns Scene+ Rewards points on all purchases, you will earn even more on your travel booking.

The cool part about this new travel platform is that you can split your bookings between cash and points, and still earn the full 3 Scene+ points for every dollar spent. This offers a great way to cash out your points even if you don’t have enough to score that big family vacation you’ve been saving for.

Plus, booking with the Scene+ Travel portal It’s open to all Scene+ program members, whether you have a co-branded Scotiabank credit card or not.

Whether you are interested in earning Scene+ points on your next booking or want to redeem Scene+ points to save on your next travel booking, log in at the Scene+ Travel Portal, then click on “Book Scene+ Travel Now”.

Next, you’ll be taken to a page where you can choose your dates and preferred travel destination. I decided to see just how dedicated Expedia is to making its entire portfolio available to Scene+ members and searched for a hotel in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

I was not disappointed:

After you’ve selected your hotel, click the room type you want. You’ll be given the option to pay now or pay later. You’ll also be shown the total price and the amount of Scene+ you can expect to earn from your booking.

If you are interested in redeeming Scene+ points to save on your booking, you can do so on the payment screen. You’ll be able to toggle the amount of Scene+ points you want to redeem, down to a single penny. For this example, I set the amount to 40,000 Scene+ points for a total value of $400 off the hotel.

After that, type in your credit card info, finalize your booking, and your booking is set, be that a visit to the center of the ancient Silk Road or a nice all-inclusive in Punta Cana.

As a reminder, redeeming Scene+ points for Expedia bookings is not the only redemption option available. Scene+ members can also make redemptions at the same 1 cent per point value on all other travel transactions (including travel you book directly yourself), as well as select grocery, liquor, pharmacy, dining, and Cineplex entertainment purchases.

The Best Ways to Earn Scene+ Points

As mentioned earlier in this article, Scene+ Points are easy to come by. This is because the company itself has robust partnerships with grocery stores under the Empire umbrella, such as Sobeys and Safeway, as well as with restaurants like Harvey’s and Swiss Chalet.

However, if you only collect Scene+ points at the checkout, you’re not going to earn enough to earn a free (or heavily subsidized) vacation anytime soon. For that, you’ll want to turbocharge your Scene+ earning potential by getting one of Scotiabank’s Scene+ co-branded credit cards.

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

One of the Frugal Flyer team’s favorite credit cards is the Scotiabank Gold American Express card. That’s because it earns 6 Scene+ Rewards points per dollar spent at Empire grocery stores, including the popular Sobeys, Safeway, and Freshco grocery stores, making it one of the best credit cards for grocery purchases.

The Scotiabank Gold American Express card also has a welcome bonus of up to 40,000 Scene+ points:

  • Earn 20,000 Scene+ points upon spending $2,000 in the first 3 months
  • Earn 20,000 Scene+ points upon spending $7,500 in the first year

Still not convinced? It also earns 5 Scene+ points per dollar spent on all other dining and grocery purchases, as well as 3 Scene+ points on rideshare, taxis, trains, transit, and streaming services. Plus, it is also one of the few credit cards that has no foreign transaction fees, making it a great tool to have in your wallet for international travel.

If you use the Scotiabank Gold American Express card to book travel through the Scene+ Travel Expedia portal you will also receive 4 Scene+ points per dollar spent.

The Scotiabank Gold American Express card also only has an annual fee of $120 and a minimum annual personal or household income requirement of $12,000, making this card a viable choice for Canadians of every income bracket.

Conclusion

The new Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia Portal offers Scene+ program members the ability to earn and redeem points whenever convenient on this new platform.

While the redemption remains capped at 1 cent per point, it still offers a high level of convenience and simplicity because of its integration into Expedia’s network of travel partners, and makes it easy to use your points on redemptions.

Until next time, remember that travel anywhere in the world is always better when you can save money by redeeming Scene+ points earned via a co-branded Scotiabank credit card.
