Review: JW Marriott Hotel Muscat

Following my first class flight with Etihad, I had a brief layover in Abu Dhabi before continuing on to my final destination of Muscat, Oman. As a first-time visitor, I decided to do some hotel hopping during my four nights in the city.

I’m a big fan of the JW Marriott brand and was eager to check out this property, as it’s one of the newer Marriott-branded hotels in Muscat. I primarily chose this hotel for its close proximity to Muscat International Airport (MCT), since after a couple of long travel days I wanted the arrival experience to be as seamless and hassle-free as possible.

Here’s a look at everything you can expect from a stay at the JW Marriott Hotel Muscat, and whether it’s worth considering during a visit to Muscat.

Booking

One of the things I love about traveling in the Middle East is how attractively priced luxury hotels and resorts often are. Cash rates, in particular, tend to be far more affordable than comparable luxury properties in North America, especially if you’re willing to travel during the shoulder season or other off-peak periods.

For my stay, I paid 38 OMR (CA$136) for a one-night stay, which I thought was an excellent price for a hotel of this caliber. During peak season, nightly rates can climb to around 76 OMR (CA$273), which I still consider reasonable.

Given the low cash prices, the JW Marriott Muscat isn’t a particularly strong candidate for a Marriott Bonvoy redemption. Award nights start at 60,000 points per night and can rise to 100,000 points during peak season. Even at the lowest redemption level, this yields a points valuation well below our target of roughly one cent per point. As such, it makes more sense to pay cash here and save your Bonvoy points for a more compelling redemption elsewhere.

Another reason luxury hotel stays in the Middle East are so appealing is the consistently strong elite recognition and amenities offered to status holders. Marriott Bonvoy’s breakfast benefit shines in this region, with elite members often enjoying an expansive and indulgent morning spread each morning.

Holding at least Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status is a surefire way to significantly enhance any Marriott stay. A card like the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Card makes earning Platinum status far easier, as it grants 15 elite qualifying nights each year simply for holding the card, reducing the burden of completing the full 50-night requirement.

Check-in

I arrived late in the evening to a quiet lobby and was assisted promptly by the front desk agent. As a Titanium member, I received a welcome amenity of 1,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points. Since JW Marriott Muscat has an executive lounge, I didn’t need to select complimentary breakfast as my welcome amenity, as breakfast is already included with lounge access.

Although the lounge is open throughout the day, breakfast is served in the main restaurant rather than the lounge. This is actually my preference when it comes to breakfast, since the main hotel restaurant typically offers a much broader and more varied selection than the lounge.

I didn’t contact the hotel in advance to request an upgrade, but at check-in the agent let me know that I had been upgraded to a Junior Suite, which is always appreciated.

After providing a brief overview of the property’s restaurants and amenities and completing the arrival formalities, I was handed my key and headed up to my room.

Location

JW Marriott Hotel Muscat is situated in Muscat’s Madinat Al Irfan district, within the Airport Heights area, and is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from Muscat International Airport (MCT).

The hotel is directly next to the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, making it particularly convenient for business travelers, and is within easy reach of city attractions like the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat City Centre, and other landmarks across the capital.

The hotel does offer a car service to and from the airport, though rideshares and taxis are widely available and come at a much lower cost.

Uber and Lyft do not operate in Oman, but similar ride-hailing services such as Otaxi are available, along with standard taxis. Just keep in mind that most taxis only accept cash.

Parking

JW Marriott Muscat offers complimentary on-site and valet parking to all guests.

Room – 1 King Junior Suite

I was assigned a Junior Suite on an executive level floor.

Stepping inside the suite places you in the living room which is furnished with a sofa, armchair and a desk adjacent to the entrance door.

The desk provides an ideal workspace, and neatly arranged on it are folders containing information about the hotel, the room service menu, and a QR code for accessing the hotel’s web portal.

A handwritten welcome note from the general manager, accompanied by a pistachio and date tart, was placed on the coffee table before my arrival.

The minibar cabinet was well stocked, featuring an Illy coffee maker along with a selection of complimentary coffees and teas. Bottled water was provided, and a refrigerator was available for guest use.

The spacious bedroom features a king-sized bed positioned prominently at its center, flanked by two nightstands. Rather than a standard bench placed at the foot of the bed, a chaise lounge is used to add an additional layer of comfort and luxury.

The mattress, bedding, and pillows were supremely comfortable. As always, I appreciated JW Marriott’s turndown service, with a pair of slippers by the bedside, a bottle of water on the nightstand, and the sheets neatly folded back.

As a newer property, the bedside included multiple outlets and USB ports for charging devices, along with a control panel that managed all the suite’s lighting and the motorized curtains.

Opposite the bed, against the far wall, was a flatscreen TV accompanied by an additional desk area. In the corner, an armchair was paired with a reading lamp.

Between the bedroom and the bathroom was the walk-in closet, offering ample room to hang clothes and store luggage.

The closet also featured a safe, an iron and ironing board, a robe, and two pairs of slippers.

The bathroom is well appointed, featuring all the standard fixtures. Notably, it only has a single vanity, which is somewhat uncommon for a modern luxury property, where dual vanities are typically expected.

While the bathroom’s layout may not have allowed for a second vanity, when staying in a suite, it’s something I would consider reasonable to have.

To the left of the vanity area was a private toilet chamber, which contained both a toilet and a bidet.

On the opposite side of the bathroom was a combined shower and bathtub area. The shower featured both an overhead rainfall fixture and a handheld showerhead, and beside it was a built-in soaking tub.

As is standard at all JW Marriott properties, bath amenities are supplied by Aromatherapy Associates.

Overall, the suite I was assigned was close to flawless. The rooms were clean, modern, and comfortable, equipped with every amenity one could need. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a few long days of travel.

Restaurants

As a full-service hotel located adjacent to the city’s main convention center, JW Marriott Muscat offers a solid selection of on-site dining options.

Kitchen 7 – Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Complimentary Breakfast

On my only morning at the hotel, breakfast was served in the main restaurant, Kitchen 7.

The breakfast buffet offered a wide and varied selection of international dishes, spanning Middle Eastern, Asian, European, Indian, and North American cuisines. It featured all the usual breakfast staples such as fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries, cold cuts, and cheeses.

In addition to the standard North American fare, there was an impressive array of hot international options, including Middle Eastern grilled meats, Thai tom yum soup, and Indian tandoori dishes.

Alongside the buffet, guests could order made-to-order items such as eggs prepared any style, as well as freshly made items including pancakes and waffles.

As I was finishing breakfast, several staff members, along with the restaurant manager, came by my table to thank me for visiting the hotel and to wish me a pleasant journey. They presented me with a signed note from the restaurant team and a small gift bag containing a jar of Omani honey. I found this to be an especially impressive gesture given how brief my stay was.

JW Market

JW Market is a cafe and bakery located in the lobby serving hot and cold drinks and a selection of pastries throughout the day.

Butter Buns, Pink Salt, and Catch

I didn’t have a chance to visit any of the other restaurants on the property, but I did take a quick look inside Butter Buns. It appears to be a fun, sport-bar venue serving craft beers and burgers, complete with retro arcade games, as well as pool and foosball tables.

The property also features two other on-site dining options: Pink Salt, a steakhouse, and Catch, a poolside restaurant specializing in Mediterranean seafood.

Facilities

Executive Lounge

Guests with Platinum status or higher, and those staying in executive-level rooms, enjoy access to the hotel’s executive lounge on the top floor.

The lounge occupies a significant portion of the floor and offers a variety of seating options, from dining tables to comfortable armchairs and sofas, along with outdoor patio seating.

Refreshments are available throughout the day, including infused water, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, soda, and snacks like nuts, dates, and dried fruit.

An evening hors d’oeuvres service is also offered. I arrived at the hotel too late to attend, but I assume it’s similar to other JW Marriott lounge evening services, featuring a selection of finger foods and appetizers accompanied by complimentary alcoholic beverages.

Fitness Center

Since the JW Marriott Muscat has only been open for a few years, its fitness center features modern strength machines and cardio equipment, along with a solid selection of free weights and benches. Overall, it’s an excellent hotel gym and more than sufficient for a thorough workout.

Detox water, fresh fruit, coffee, and other refreshments are available, along with complimentary headphones to use during your workout.

Part of the fitness center facilities also include two multiuse courts, available for guests to enjoy at their leisure.

Pool

JW Marriott Muscat features three outdoor swimming pools, including a family pool, a children’s pool, and a lap pool located at the spa.

Garden Pool

The Garden Pool is an infinity-edge swimming pool that wraps around the lower levels of the property and serves as the hotel’s primary pool area for families with children.

The pool area offers ample loungers, with plenty of spots to soak up the sun or relax in the shade.

Lap Pool

The Lap Pool is located at the spa and fitness center building and is partially sheltered by an overhead awning, offering a good degree of relief from the intense sun.

Spa

JW Marriott properties always tend to have excellent spa facilities and JW Marriott Muscat is no exception. Along with a full range of spa treatments available, guests have complimentary access to the rest of the spa facilities including the sauna and steam room.

Spa treatments begin at 30 OMR (CA$108), and a full list of offerings can be found on the JW Marriott Muscat Spa by JW website.

Conclusion

Of the three Marriott properties I visited in Muscat, the JW Marriott Muscat stood out as my favorite. The combination of its rooms, facilities, location, and especially its exceptional service made it the best of the bunch.

The JW Marriott brand rarely disappoints, especially at its luxury properties in the Middle East where your money goes further. JW Marriott Muscat offers excellent elite recognition, an outstanding breakfast, and I would happily stay here again if the opportunity arises.

  1. How did you get that rate? I’ve played with many dates and I cannot get less than 50 OMR/night over the next 3 months, even using a corporate rate.

    • Hi Max

I booked my stay using the American Express Bonvoy Business Card rate. This is a benefit of the U.S. Amex Bonvoy Business card, which offers a 7% discount off the member rate.

The rate was 38 OMR + 7 OMR in taxes/fees for a total of 45 OMR/night. I should have included that detail initially, but I hope this clears it up for you.
