This new credit card offers some useful travel benefits for a solid annual fee, plus Blue Points are soon to be the newest transferable currency in Canada, opening up even more redemption opportunities.

Is the BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard worth putting in your wallet? Let’s take a look.

Earning Rates

The BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard earns Blue Points for all eligible purchases made on the card at the following rates:

  • 10 Blue Points per dollar at participating Blue Rewards partners, including Blue Rewards Travel, on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year
  • 2 Blue Points per dollar on groceries, gas, EV charging, wholesale clubs (such as Costco), and alcohol, on up to $500 per category per statement cycle
  • 1 Blue Point per dollar on everything else

With Blue Points worth approximately 0.67 cents a pop, these rates work out to 6.67% back on Blue Rewards partners, 1.33% on groceries, gas, EV charging, wholesale clubs, and liquor stores, and 0.67% back on everything else.

Be mindful of the $25,000 cap on bonuses on total purchases at Blue Rewards per year, as well as the $500 per category limit on the 2x category.

Annual Fee

The BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard has an annual fee of $150, which is typically waived in the first year as part of the welcome bonus, so ensure you check the offer terms and conditions before applying. After that, holding a BMO Premium Chequing Account rebates the fee every year.

Benefits

Four DragonPass Airport Lounge Passes Per Year

The card includes a complimentary Mastercard Travel Pass membership provided by DragonPass, plus four free lounge passes per calendar year. Visits past the first four incur a fee of $35 USD per entry.

Once the cardholder has registered for Mastercard Travel Pass, they will have access to all four lounge passes that can be used by the cardholder for themselves and their guests.

$200 NEXUS Credit

In the first year of card membership, the BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard is eligible to reimburse up to $200 CAD of a NEXUS membership application fee charged to the primary card.

As NEXUS applications cost $120 USD, this nets out to slightly above the cost of a single application, or zeroes out one application and provides value on a second transaction, such as for a child or spouse.

Roadside Assistance Benefit

This card also includes basic roadside assistance, subcontracted by the Dominion Auto Association.

Service calls are limited to four per year, and cannot be to or from the site of an accident. Coverage for battery boosts or to repair shops within 10 kilometers is permitted.

Instacart+ & Monthly $10 Instacart Credit

While a small benefit, the BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard also offers six months of Instacart+ and a $10 monthly Instacart credit. If you are already a regular Instacart user, this is as good as money right back in your pocket.

Rental Car Discounts

Cardholders can save up to 20% on National Car Rental®†† and Alamo Rent A Car®†† and up to 5% on Enterprise Rent-A-Car®†† at locations worldwide using BMO’s Car Rental Booking tool.

Insurance Coverage

Emergency medical coverage pays up to $5 million per person for the first 15 days of a trip if you’re 64 or younger. Trip cancellation coverage of up to $1,500 per person and trip interruption coverage of up to $2,000 per person apply even when you book with Blue Points, as long as any applicable taxes and fees are charged to your Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard.

Flight delay, baggage, rental car, common carrier, hotel burglary, purchase security, and extended warranty coverage round out the package.

Redeeming Blue Points

Blue Rewards keeps things simple: 1,500 Blue Points are worth $10, or 0.67 cents per point, when redeemed for eGift cards or in-store at partners like Pharmasave. The Expedia-powered Blue Rewards Travel portal pays a hair less, at roughly 0.63 cents per point – there is no direct mechanism to redeem points for statement credit directly against travel transactions at an equivalent or better rate.

As of late 2026, members will soon be able to convert Blue Points into VIPorter points at a rate of 2:1, in addition to offering members ways to earn VIPorter points on daily transactions.

Frugal Flyer’s Thoughts on BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard

The BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard is an interesting product as it was launched prior to having its loyalty program revamped. Initially, Blue Rewards’ priority was simply commencing operations, which led to it not having the best redemption rates.

However, now that VIPorter is on board as a partner, the potential for Blue Points is a lot higher as it makes them one of the few convertible points currencies in Canada, and the newest one.

While the earning rates are not of the best value for everyday use, there is one exception: for those who clip coupons or maximize by shopping the Blue Rewards partners, or who want to fly Porter. If you’re looking forward to being connected to the rest of Canada by one of the best economy products on the market, or shop at a lot of Blue Rewards retailers, this is the card well worth adding to your wallet.

BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard

If Porter Airlines is your endgame, the BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard earns 3 VIPorter points on Porter flights booked directly with the airline up to $20,000 a year, and 2x on gas, transportation, and hotels up to $5,000 a year per category. It also outpaces the Blue Rewards on dining and groceries by earning 2x up to $10,000 per category per year.

The card also grants VIPorter Venture status, complete with free checked bags, albeit for a steeper $199 annual fee, which is typically waived in the first year as part of the welcome offer.

This product also comes with similar roadside benefits, though its spending categories are a bit more complicated to understand and there are no partners to transfer the cashback to.

Conclusion

The BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard is a great first-year card and a niche keeper for Canadians who shop at Blue Rewards retailers a lot, or for people who want to transfer to VIPorter going forward.

With AIR MILES unfortunately going the way of the dinosaurs, it is good to see Blue Rewards continues to expand, and as the only new transferable currency in Canada, these are points that are useful to have.
