How to Book Etihad First Class With Points

etihad first class the residence seating

Flying international first class is one of the main reasons many of us get into the points and miles hobby. Whether your goal is to travel more affordably, enjoy greater comfort, or a mix of both, a first class flight is a shared aspiration for many aviation enthusiasts.

Securing first class flights with points has become more challenging over recent years, as many airlines have downsized or eliminated their first class cabins while also tightening award availability through higher redemption rates or restricted partner access. Etihad Airways is a prime example, with most award space now limited to its own Etihad Guest program and only one other partner airline.

In this guide, we will take a closer look at Etihad first class, covering both the onboard experience and the strategies for booking one of the world’s premier first class products with points.

The Etihad Airways First Class Flight Experience

Etihad Airways offers a first class cabin on select Boeing 787-9 aircraft and on all Airbus A380s. While you won’t see the Boeing 787-9 first class product in any of Etihad’s marketing materials, as the airline only publicly showcases its Airbus A380 first class, known as The Apartment, which is one of the most luxurious and spacious first class suites in the sky.

Furthermore, you’ll also find one exclusive The Residence on the Airbus A380, which is a three-room suite complete with its own personal bathroom and bedroom with a full-sized bed.

You cannot directly redeem points for The Residence. You must first redeem for a first class Apartment ticket and then either pay a cash upgrade or hope for a complimentary upgrade at check-in.

On the Boeing 787-9, first class consists of private suites with power-operated doors, a fully lie-flat leather recliner, and a minibar.

I’ve had the opportunity to fly on both of Etihad’s first class products, and each was incredible in its own way. My flight on the Boeing 787-9 was especially memorable as it was my first ever first class flight redemption and I was thrilled to have my brother with me along for the ride.

Meanwhile, the Airbus A380 experience took things to an entirely different level as I was surprisingly upgraded at boarding to The Residence. The sheer amount of personal space is nearly unmatched, and the chance to enjoy a shower at 40,000 feet will never get old.

Whether you’re on the 787-9 or A380, both aircraft offer world-class dining, featuring caviar, premium champagne and spirits, exquisite Arabic cuisine, and exceptional Middle Eastern hospitality from the cabin crew.

Etihad first class passengers are treated to an array of luxury items as part of the experience. This includes Giorgio Armani loungewear and slippers, along with an amenity kit filled with ESPA skincare products.

Etihad Airways First Class Routes

Here in Canada, we’re especially fortunate that Etihad operates its only North American Airbus A380 service to none other than Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). This presents a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s best first class flights nonstop from Canada to the Middle East, which is particularly notable since Canada isn’t typically a major market for first class service.

Etihad is currently operating four Airbus A380 routes, which includes daily service to Toronto (YYZ), London (LHR), Paris (CDG), and Singapore (SIN).

Etihad operates its Boeing 787-9 equipped with first class on select routes from its hub in Abu Dhabi to New York (JFK), Washington, DC (IAD), Casablanca (CMN), and Geneva (GVA), among others. The aircraft also serves London (LHR) and Paris (CDG), where Etihad runs multiple daily flights using both the Airbus A380 and the 787-9 Dreamliner.

Which Route & Direction to Fly

When booking a one-way redemption on Etihad Airways first class it’s important to consider not only the route but also the direction of travel, as both can greatly affect your in-flight experience and any additional costs you might incur. To maximize the value of a redemption, the Airbus A380 routes are the most attractive in my opinion, as they offer Etihad’s most premium first class product.

The Toronto (YYZ) service is particularly appealing for Canadians, as Toronto is an easy city for Canadians to connect to, along with providing over 14 hours in the air. However, this redemption comes at a steep cost of more than 110,000 points one-way, which can be especially challenging if traveling with a companion.

For most travelers, I think the real sweet spot lies on the London (LHR) or Paris (CDG) routes. These require significantly fewer points while still delivering a full seven-hour first class experience, making them much more accessible redemptions without sacrificing too much time in the air to enjoy Etihad’s most premium cabin.

You might assume that starting your journey in Abu Dhabi to enjoy Etihad’s first class lounge would be the natural decision. While there’s nothing wrong with this approach, I would suggest that you start your travel from Europe instead for one key reason.

This is because both of Etihad’s Airbus A380 flights departing from Abu Dhabi to London and Paris are scheduled for a rather unappealing time of 2:05 AM and 2:30 AM, respectively. This does result in a slightly more scaled-back meal service compared to a daytime flight.

Therefore, I’d recommend beginning your trip in London or Paris, as flights from both cities depart at a far more convenient mid-morning time. This avoids an overly early start and gives you a full daytime Etihad first class flight to enjoy all of the food, drinks, and amenities.

Keep in mind that departing from London Heathrow (LHR) will impose the UK Air Passenger Duty, which substantially increases the taxes and fees on your redemption. To compare, departures from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) carry lower charges at about CA$225 versus roughly CA$500 when flying out of London.

One final point to keep in mind is that due to the limited route network of Etihad’s Airbus A380, you’ll almost certainly need to book a positioning flight unless you’re based in the Greater Toronto Area. And while the idea of a positioning flight to Europe may sound a bit crazy, it’s simply the reality when trying to secure a seat in The Apartment.

Booking Etihad Airways First Class with Points

There are two main airline loyalty programs to consider when booking Etihad Airways first class, both of which are accessible to Canadians. Each program has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, which I’ll outline in more detail shortly.

The two programs we will be focusing on are Etihad Guest and American Airlines AAdvantage. Both of these airlines are supported by our preferred award search tool, Seats.aero, making it a convenient way to track down award availability with a single tool.

Etihad does have partnerships with many other airlines, including Air Canada Aeroplan and JetBlue TrueBlue. However, first class award redemptions are only reliably available through Etihad Guest and American Airlines AAdvantage. With all other partners, the highest cabin bookable on a redemption is business class.

Booking Etihad Airways First Class with Etihad Guest

Using Etihad’s own program to book first class is the most direct way to make a first class redemption, as the airline prioritizes award availability for its own members, often releasing first class seats up to 330 days in advance. After entering your origin, destination, and travel dates, make sure to select “Book with Etihad Guest Miles” before starting your search.

You’ll often find plenty of availability by searching directly on Etihad’s website or through Seats.aero, making it possible to lock in a first class redemption well ahead of your planned travel date. The downside, however, is the high redemption rates and fees. For example, a one-way first class flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) costs 200,000 Etihad Guest miles plus about CA$787 in taxes per person.

etihad airways first class yyz to auh redemption pricing on etihad guest

First class flights between Europe and Abu Dhabi start at 120,000 Etihad Guest miles, with the Airbus A380 flight featuring The Apartments costing 20,000 miles more. Taxes and fees are also high from Europe, totaling around CA$590.

While I would consider any of the above redemptions acceptable, given that this is one of the world’s best first class experiences and easily valued at thousands of dollars, the biggest drawback of using Etihad Guest is its absolutely brutal and frankly punitive cancellation policy.

The table below illustrates how the cancellation policy applies to award redemptions. In short, the amount you will receive back as a refund depends on how far in advance you cancel and the fare type of your booking. For reference, most Etihad Guest premium cabin award bookings are considered Comfort fares.

etihad guest award ticket cancellation policy fees

To summarize, if you cancel an Etihad Guest award booking, you will be subject to the following policy:

  • 21+ days before departure: 25% of the fare is non-refundable
  • 8–21 days before departure: 50% of the fare is non-refundable
  • 1–7 days before departure: 75% of the fare is non-refundable
  • Within 24 hours of departure: Cancellations are not permitted

If you think that sounds bad (it is), it gets worse. The non-refundable portion applies to the entire fare, which includes the miles used and any fees paid as part of your booking. Meaning you’ll only get back a fixed percentage of both the miles and cash paid for your booking.

With that in mind, although Etihad Guest offers the advantage of the most award availability nearly a year in advance, I would advise proceeding with extreme caution when booking, and only if you are completely certain you won’t need to cancel your flight.

How to Earn Etihad Guest Miles

The most direct way for Canadians to earn Etihad Guest miles is by transferring American Express Membership Rewards (CA) points to the program, though the transfer ratio is less favorable at 1:0.75.

Despite the reduced transfer rate, the welcome bonus from cards like the American Express Platinum Card can bring you close to the miles needed for a first class redemption between Abu Dhabi and Europe.

A more effective way to earn large sums of Etihad Guest miles is by transferring points from U.S.-based bank programs. Etihad Guest is a transfer partner with American Express Membership Rewards (U.S.), Capital One Miles, and Citi ThankYou Rewards, all of which transfer at a 1:1 ratio.

Booking Etihad Airways First Class with American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage offers a strong alternative for booking Etihad first class, with far more attractive award pricing and significantly lower taxes and fees compared to Etihad Guest. On top of that, AAdvantage has one of the most generous cancellation policies of any major airline, allowing free cancellations on all award bookings. Furthermore, members can place a free 24-hour award hold on all bookings.

The main drawback, however, is that Etihad first class award space is only available to AAdvantage members 14 days in advance of the departure date. This can make it challenging to plan ahead, and often requires you to book other flights and hotels before even securing the Etihad first class seat. That said, award availability is generally quite reliable, and AAdvantage frequently has up to four first class seats available in the days leading up to a flight.

You can search for Etihad first class directly on the American Airlines website, which even includes a convenient calendar view to see all available Etihad first class space at a glance. You just need to select the “Redeem miles” checkbox before initiating your search.

If flying between Europe and the Middle East, you can expect to pay 62,500 AAdvantage miles plus US$164 in taxes and fees per person.

Selecting the calendar view at the top of the search results page and applying the filters for “Nonstop only” and “First Class,” you’ll see only the available Etihad first class flights for your selected route.

If you want to begin your journey in North America, flying between Toronto (YYZ) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) on the Airbus A380 is very fairly priced for a 14-hour first class flight, costing 110,000 AAdvantage miles and US$57 in taxes and fees.

To further maximize an AAdvantage redemption, you can include a connecting business class flight within the region at no additional cost in miles. For example, you could book an Etihad itinerary that includes a first class flight from Paris (CDG) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) with an onward connecting business class flight to Muscat (MCT) for the same 62,500 AAdvantage miles. However, you will have to pay some additional taxes and fees.

As I mentioned, American Airlines AAdvantage award flights can be canceled at any time before departure at no cost, and the miles will be immediately deposited back to your account. Despite the limited access to Etihad first class availability, I think the combination of better redemption rates, lower taxes and fees, and free cancellation makes AAdvantage the preferable option for securing an Etihad first class award flight, provided you’re comfortable with booking last-minute.

How to Earn American Airlines AAdvantage Miles

Canadians can transfer RBC Avion Rewards Points directly to American Airlines AAdvantage, though at a less-than-ideal ratio of 1:0.7. Normally, I wouldn’t recommend this transfer, but considering we’re talking about one of the world’s premier first class experiences, I think it’s reasonable to make an exception in this case, as earning AAdvantage miles in large quantities can be difficult if you don’t have access to U.S. credit cards.

For those who do have an ITIN and access to U.S. credit cards, Citibank is the only credit card issuer to partner with American Airlines AAdvantage. Citi offers several co-branded American Airlines cards, and you can transfer Citi ThankYou Points to AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio.

We have a complete guide for Canadians on getting started with U.S. credit cards, covering everything you need to know.

Beyond the two partner banks mentioned, avenues to earn American Airlines AAdvantage miles are quite limited. One of the other few options is transferring Marriott Bonvoy points to AAdvantage at a 3:1 ratio. However, I would recommend doing this only as a last resort, and only if you need a small top-up to complete a redemption.

Conclusion

Etihad first class is considered by many as one of the ultimate experiences for points and miles enthusiasts. While opportunities to earn and redeem the required points for a redemption are quite limited, it’s very achievable, and an experience I wholeheartedly recommend.

I have fond memories of both my Etihad first class flights, but the Airbus A380 in particular delivers an otherworldly experience complete with a massive suite, fine dining, and amazing service.

American Airlines AAdvantage would be my recommended route for Canadians looking to book Etihad first class. However, Etihad Guest is still a viable option, and with the information provided here, you should now be able to weigh the pros and cons of each program to decide which path is best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

All of Etihad’s Airbus A380s feature the airline’s signature first class product, The Apartment. As for the Boeing 787-9, only a select handful of aircraft have a first class cabin. It’s best to check the seatmap on the Etihad website to confirm the aircraft scheduled to operate the flight.

You can book Etihad first class with Etihad Guest and American Airlines AAdvantage. Each program has a different award chart and availability.

Etihad Guest generally opens award space about 330 days in advance.

American Airlines AAdvantage only has access to Etihad first class award seats 14 days prior to departure.

The Residence is a private three-room suite featuring a living room, bedroom, and private shower, designed for up to two passengers. First Class Apartments are large single-occupancy suites, but they do not include a separate bedroom or private shower.

All of Etihad’s Airbus A380s feature both products, with nine Apartments and one Residence located on the upper deck of each aircraft.
