td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-privilege-review-featured

Aeroplan is the best frequent flyer program in Canada, and with that, it is also the program of choice that many consumers look to earn points in to make their next flight redemption a reality.

While you could earn Aeroplan points the more traditional way through flying on Air Canada and Star Alliance partners, you can also supercharge your earnings by holding and using one of the best Aeroplan credit cards available to Canadians: the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card. Not only does this card present a good opportunity to earn Aeroplan points, but it also comes with a significant amount of Air Canada and travel-related benefits to improve your next vacation.

Let’s dive into our TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card review to see if this premium credit card has a spot in your wallet.

Aeroplan points are valued at around 2 cents per point and as a result, this welcome bonus is worth around $1,700 when redeeming for an award flight on Air Canada or another Star Alliance carrier.

Earning Rates

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege credit card accrues Aeroplan points for all eligible purchases made on the card:

  • 2 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on Air Canada purchases, including Air Canada flights and Air Canada Vacations packages.
  • 1.5 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on eligible gas, groceries, travel, and dining.
  • 1.25 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on all other purchases.

The earning rates are reasonable, and it’s nice to have a credit card that natively accrues Aeroplan points as that means any spend on this card also counts towards Aeroplan’s Everyday Status Qualification program if you are looking for an easier path to Aeroplan 25k status.

Annual Fee

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege credit card is a premium credit card, and as a result, commands a premium annual fee of $599.

While an annual fee this high may create sticker shock for some who have yet to explore the benefits of premium credit cards, when you take a look at the holistic package the card offers, including welcome bonus and benefits, you are receiving far more than $599 in value making it well worth signing up for.

Benefits

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege credit card comes with a wealth of benefits on Air Canada, Dragonpass airport lounge passes, a NEXUS rebate, and a variety of insurance coverage. If you are a frequent Air Canada passenger, this is one of the best Visa credit cards in Canada to have in your wallet.

Air Canada Benefits

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege cardholders will receive a free first checked bag on Air Canada flights. This benefit extends to up to eight guests that are traveling on the same reservation and is a great way to save on Air Canada baggage fees. The cardholder and guests on their itinerary will also receive priority check-in, priority boarding, priority airport standby, and priority baggage handling.

The primary cardholder will receive complimentary and unlimited access to the network of Air Canada Maple Leaf Airport Lounges to indulge in food, drink, and a quiet place to rest before their next flight on Air Canada or a Star Alliance carrier. Complimentary access is currently provided for the cardholder and one guest until the end of 2023. Same-day boarding passes for an Air Canada flight or Star Alliance flight are required to enter.

If you are working towards Aeroplan elite status, or more particularly the valuable Aeroplan 50k status, spending on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card can earn you status qualifying miles (SQM) and status qualifying segments (SQS). Cardholders will receive one status qualifying segment and 1,000 SQM for every $5,000 in net purchases on the card.

Cardholders who hold elite status within the Aeroplan program can roll over up to 50 unused eUpgrade credits to be used during the following status year. Check out our introduction to eUpgrades or comprehensive eUpgrades guide to ensure you are getting the most value out of your eUpgrades.

Upon spending $25,000 on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege in an anniversary year, the cardholder will receive an Air Canada Worldwide Companion Pass. Starting at $99 (and increasing depending on destination), this pass allows the cardholder to book a cash fare on Air Canada for themselves and a companion at a discount.

Once earned, the companion pass will show up on your Aeroplan account. The cardholder will pay the full cost of the fare (taxes and fees included), while the companion will only have to pay the applicable companion ticket fee (+ any fees/taxes associated with the ticket).

Dragonpass Airport Lounge Passes

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege cardholders are eligible to receive complimentary membership to the Visa Airport Companion Program hosted by Dragonpass International Ltd in addition to six complimentary airport lounge passes.

These lounge passes can be used by the cardholder and their guests at any eligible lounge worldwide. Cardholders will receive six annual passes each membership year and can enroll via the Visa Airport Companion program app or here.

NEXUS Rebate

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege cardholders are also eligible to receive up to $100 in NEXUS program rebates every four years. This is given in the form of a statement credit when using the card for a NEXUS application fee or NEXUS membership renewal.

The credit can be activated by simply using your TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card when applying for or renewing your NEXUS membership. You will be charged the fee but receive a statement credit within a few days of making the transaction.

I recommend looking into applying for a NEXUS membership if you travel often and want to improve your airport experience. I recently went through the interview process and it was smooth enough, requiring an interview in Canada and one when I was traveling to the United States. The benefits are great, especially as more airports start to implement Verified Traveller programs where you don’t need to even take any items out of your bags.

Insurance Coverage

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card comes with a suite of insurance coverages for both travel and day-to-day life.

As this card is a premium travel-focused credit card, the majority of the insurance coverages are tied to travel needs. Cardholders will benefit from emergency medical insurance, trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance, flight and trip delay insurance, delayed and lost baggage insurance, common carrier travel accident insurance, hotel and motel burglary insurance, and rental car collision loss damage coverage.

Most notably, if you charge the taxes and fees on an Aeroplan award booking to your card, you will be covered by those applicable insurance coverages. This is massive, as many cards do not cover award travel as they require the full cost of the flight to be charged to them. If you are interested in how this works, learn more about credit card travel insurance and award flights.

On the day-to-day insurance coverages side, cardholders can benefit from purchase security insurance, extended warranty protection, and mobile device insurance.

If you want to dig into the weeds to understand the full package of insurance coverages that are offered on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card, you can access the insurance certificate here.

Redeeming Aeroplan Points

Aeroplan points can be redeemed for a variety of purposes, including flight rewards, hotel stays, car rentals, gift cards, and merchandise. However, the undisputed best use is to redeem Aeroplan points to book flights on Air Canada and Star Alliance partners.

Redeem Aeroplan points to fly on Air Canada Signature Class

Making award flight redemptions is an art and there are best practices when booking award flights. While it absolutely requires some additional legwork in determining the possible routing and availability (consider using FlightConnections and ExpertFlyer respectively), the rewards of being able to fly economy, business, or first class for pennies on the dollar are well worth the extra work.

Comparable Cards to the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card

There are a few other Aeroplan co-branded credit cards available in Canada. Let’s take a look at two other premium credit cards, and one standard travel credit card to ensure you are adding the best credit card for your needs to your wallet.

  1. The CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege DOES give cardholders the ability to earn an annual worldwide companion pass. It’s written on CIBC’s website.
