American Express Offers: Earn Rewards & Cash Back

American Express is known as arguably the best credit card issuer in Canada when it comes to miles and points, as a result of its Membership Rewards program. The transferability of their points to hotel loyalty programs and frequent flyer programs, in addition to the outsized welcome bonuses, cannot be matched by other financial institutions.

The benefits don’t stop there though. American Express Offers, or Amex Offers, are a great way to earn additional cash back and Membership Rewards points for making purchases at specific retailers or service providers.

Let’s dive into the world of Amex Offers in Canada and the United States.

What are American Express Offers?

As part of improving their cardholder experience and continuing to provide value beyond the perks tied to the card, Amex Offers were introduced. These offers can provide cardholders with cash back (in the form of a statement credit) or bonus points (in the form of Membership Rewards) for fulfilling the terms.

Typically, offers have a structure of “Spend $X to receive $Y” at various retailers. This means when you register your card for the offer and make a purchase greater than a set amount at a retailer, you will receive a statement credit or a set amount of money (per the terms of the Amex offer).

Amex Offers will typically have a set amount of cardholders who can register, so it is always better to register early even if you are not 100% sure that you will be able to take advantage of the offer.

Examples of Previous Amex Offers

This is only a snapshot in time of some of the offers we have recently seen from Amex Offers. In years past, we have also seen offers such as:

• Receive a $200 statement credit upon spending $200 at an eligible grocery store
• Receive a $175 statement credit upon spending $175 at specific restaurants in North America
• Stackable offers in which you received cash back for staying at a Marriott property in a specific province

Needless to say, with the right offers a significant amount of value can be extracted from the Amex Offers program.

Who Is Eligible for American Express Offers?

Any individual who holds an American Express branded credit card in Canada or the United States is eligible to access Amex Offers. This includes Scotiabank customers as they also offer American Express branded cards within their Scene+ Rewards credit card lineup. These offers are available in your online account.

American Express Cardholders

Amex Offers were introduced to Canadian American Express cardholders in recent years and the program has seen some great offers albeit with a lower volume than the US version of the program. While Amex Canada has a lower volume of available offers, these offers will be your bread and butter since they are easily usable in Canada with minimal hoops to jump through.

American Express in the United States also has Amex Offers, and with a much greater volume as there are often 100+ offers available on a card. The terms and conditions need to be read much more carefully if you are a Canadian who is looking to take advantage of these offers; sometimes you might be able to take advantage of them in Canada (often via online purchases) while other times the purchase must be made in the United States.

If you hold a Scotiabank American Express credit card, you are also eligible to take advantage of Amex Offers (albeit with a different process to register, as we will touch on below). Scotiabank Amex cardholders have access to almost all of the same offers as American Express cardholders.

How to Register for Amex Offers

Depending on if you hold an American Express or Scotiabank American Express credit card, the process for registering from Amex Offers does differ.

Registering on American Express Cards

Registering for Amex Offers on an American Express card is very straightforward. Simply log into your American Express account, and click on the card for which you want to view offers. Scroll down, and you will see all of the offers that are currently available to register for.

Once you register for an Amex Offer, it will then show up under the “Registered to Card” tab if you want to review the terms of the offer in the future. If the offer shows up under that tab, it means you have successfully registered and that the offer will be applied to your card when you make an eligible purchase. These offers can also be viewed on the Amex app.

This process is identical for those who hold US American Express cards.

Registering on Scotiabank American Express Cards

Scotiabank American Express cardholders are also eligible to enroll in Amex Offers, however, the process is a bit different. In order to register their card for an offer, the cardholder will need to visit the American Express Offer portal.

Upon visiting the portal, you will see all of the offers currently available to Scotiabank Amex cardholders. To enroll, simply click on “Register your Card” for the offer you are interested in and enter your first name, last name, and Scotiabank Amex card number in the pop-up box. Once you fill that information out and click “Register your Card”, you are eligible to make purchases to fulfill the terms of the offer.

As always, ensure you review the terms and conditions of the offer to ensure you fully understand any timelines and eligibility requirements before making any purchases related to the offer.

How to Use Amex Offers

Thankfully, using Amex Offers is very simple. Once you have registered the offer to your card, all you need to do is fulfill the terms of the offer which is typically making a purchase greater than a set amount at a retailer(s). Once you fulfill the terms of the offer, no further action is required on your end.

After completing the offer, you can expect to receive a statement credit on the card that you used. If you ever want to double-check the statement credits that you have received, you can scroll down when logged into a card on the American Express site and click on “Statement Credits”.

Many offers may mention that the statement credit will be applied to your card within 90 days, however, in practice, it usually takes a few business days for the statement credit to show up.

Conclusion

Amex Offers provide cardholders with a great opportunity to earn additional cash back and Membership Rewards points at many retailers and service providers. Since these offers don’t require any action outside of registering and making a purchase, they are a no-brainer to take advantage of as an American Express cardholder.
